Alice's journey begins as all good journeys do: hitting on the sales guy at REI. After a tumultuous breakup, a quick career transition, family upheaval, and a sobriety journey that didn't fix her life quite as much as she expected it to, Alice decides that the only way to solve all her problems is to hike the Pacific Crest Trail. But as she begins preparing for the months-long quest, she realizes the answers she's seeking might not be on top of a snow-covered mountain. Especially since she just learned there was snow in California.

Mae Whitman narrates this backpacking adventure unlike any other from the brilliant and witty mind of Ginny Hogan. Alice's so-called "journey" takes an unexpected turn that’s less about trails and more about what happens when you realize that people can know how to test water for uranium and still have social anxiety.

If you've ever believed that achieving a lofty goal would somehow untangle the complexities of your life, The Great Indoors is a hilarious reminder that sometimes the best adventures happen right at home.

What a joy to listen too! While the story line of trying to “find oneself” was addressed uniquely and ended up making perfect sense, the story was made complete being delivered by such an engaging narrator. You’d think she’d experienced it herself and was just retelling the story to a friend. So natural and real, and funny right where the author meant it to be. I highly recommend this title for a quick, enjoyable listen!

Interesting Concept

Not really my cup of tea, but it was fine. I don’t even know how to describe it without giving too much away, but it’s just frustrating to read the mental gymnastics the main character goes through to convince herself she’s doing the right thing.

It was fine

Loved Mae Witman’s narration, but the main character was so very hard to like. And maybe that was the point but I kept hoping to find some redeeming quality by the end. Perhaps that made it more believable but it not nearly as fun to listen to.

Hard to like the main character

Great story. Really enjoyed the storyline and the narration. Worth the listen. Not a typical rom com, but funny.

Really enjoyable narration

The performance is great, however the main character gets a bit too annoying at some points, it is aware of its own shortcomings and those observations are witty but after a while it does get a bit exhausting

Great performance a tad annoying

Love the honest, relatable dialogue and inner monologue. Characters were well developed but not overly. Great listen:)

Easy relatable listen

This was such a relatable story as a single woman in her 30s. I freak find myself questioning things about my life and where I'm at currently. I love that this was real and raw. I mean if someone doesn't have a period in their life similar to this story, are they even human? Haha, but really, it was enjoyable and surprisingly one of the better stories I've read this year.

Relatable

I did enjoy the beginning and middle part of the story the end was disappointing and some sections through the middle were rather nasty and unnecessary. The beginning is great captivating and somewhat funny but by the end the writer gets rather annoying and it became increasingly difficult to continue. It's disappointing she didn't go through with her pla , that is a follow-up book I would listen to.
