Resumen del Editor

"The year 1169 dawned upon a quiet East. Along this frontier of Christianity, nothing unusual was taking place. Nothing ominous, that is. And in that part of the East known as the Holy Land, the crusaders went about their affairs without misgivings."

So opens Harold Lamb's magnificent history. However, out of the chaos of Muslim tribal warfare and regional animosity arose a military genius such as Islam had never known: Saladin. Uniting the sultanates of Cairo and Damascus, Saladin created a single powerful state. Luring the crusaders into an ill-considered confrontation, he destroyed their army at the Battle of Hattin in 1187, leaving the few remaining crusaders clinging perilously to a series of towns and forts along the Levantine coast. Into this desperate situation stepped the most formidable warrior of the age, Richard the Lion-Hearted. Hear the incredible tales of valor and futility as King Richard attempts to retake Jerusalem. And after him, many other kings would come forward....

Fantastic second half book on the crusades

Whole there are many works on this time period, the passion for the heart and the mind of the main actors is clear and vibrant in Harold Lamb's work here. He doesn't pull any punches, but is careful to keep perspective on what their actions meant then, rather than try to force modern (1930s) values and judge them by those.

The narration, as always with Audio Connoisseur, was superb. Every performer has a style that suits some books better than others, but after reading Mr. Griffin for over 20 long books, this one suited (and part 1) him as well as any other book he's done.

An absolute Joy to read

By far the best historical narration I have ever had the privilege to read the author voice is clear and the narrator makes you feel you are there with the Sultans, Kings, Marmuluks, and Knights.

A classic history of the crusades

it was a joy to listen to this reading of Harold Lambs work. though written decades ago it stands among any history written today.
