Acerca de esta escucha

From the author of the beloved, best-selling HENRIETTA AND INSPECTOR HOWARD series, winner of over 80 international awards.

When eight-year-old Nora arrives at the Park Ridge School for Girls in 1932, she is sure there’s been some mistake. She can’t imagine why she and her little sister, Patsy, were torn from their mother, only to be subjected to the cruel whims of the house matron, Mrs. Morris. When their mother fails to rescue them week after week—and Mrs. Morris drops hints that their mother may be a “fallen woman”—Nora begins to doubt they will ever see her again.

Nine years prior, at seventeen, Gertie Gufftason runs off with Lorenzo, the barker for the traveling carnival passing through her small coal-mining town in Southern Iowa. Thinking she is embarking on a fantastic adventure, Gertie is bitterly disappointed by the life that follows and is thrown into despair when the State removes their two daughters.

Gertie eventually tracks down her girls at the Park Ridge, but, expecting a warm welcome, she is shocked by Nora’s cool reception. Nora reluctantly returns home with Gertie and Patsy, determined to live a more perfect life than her mother. It is only when she discovers a secret Gertie has kept hidden all these years that Nora begins to fully understand—and forgive—her mother’s tragic choices....

Loved the story but not the reader. Her voice was almost monotonously irritating until I finally got used to it.

Narrator didn’t appeal to me

Excellent book for anyone (which is everyone)who has been in a family and made mistakes.

A complicated story intertwining many characters over 3 generations but so well connected by the author’s beautiful writing.

IMO, the story was compelling but predictable. It was an easy read and the character development was strong. I had a difficult time with the narration and at times found it annoying

I loved this story, it reminds me of listening to my mother-in-laws early years. Although not exact she was separated early on from her mother and had to go live with one relative and another so her mother could work. It is heartbreaking that children were treated as a thing that their little minds were so inconsequential to treat gently. Loved the realization at the end, love and forgiveness especially of yourself.

The ending was so redemptive and uplifting

The story touched me. However, the narrative sounded “tired”. I’m from Iowa so much of background felt real

Great family legacy

The narrator was so annoying. Like listening to my grandmother trying to change her voice for 4 different people and not one of them worked. By far the hardest narration I have listened to. Was about to give up but managed to stay as the story line improved. Unfortunately not the narrator.

Good story.

The narrator’s voice truly enhanced this audio novel. The story itself was realistic, honest, and engaging—so much so that I couldn’t put this one down.

Rivetting Tale

I found the narrator so annoying and turned it off. It grated on me and I couldn’t listen.

The fallen Womsn’s daughters

The mother and daughters and their individual struggles were magnetic and very relatable. I enjoyed this a lot.

Read straight through.

The woman reading the story had such an irritating voice! she sounded like a 100 year old woman or the witch on The Wizard of Oz! Even when doing the children's voices. Her gravely voice almost made me stop. However, the storyline kept me listening in spite of her voice. Was relieved when I was finished and no longer had to listen.

Good storyline. Horrible narrator voice!
