the fall of the house of usher

** I received this audiobook in exchange for a honest review**

well, we all know the story so I won't spend anytime there. Kevin Theis is the narrator for this masterpiece. He spoke clearly and loudly. However, his reading could have used a little more emotion to put it over the top. The sound quality of the recording was excellent.

I enjoy Edgar Allan Poe stories

I have always enjoyed Edgar Allan Poe's work. This was a good story, although some of the words used are not as understandable.

Old school dramatization of a creepy story

Narrator Kevin Theis gets totally into 19th century character for this creepy Edgar Allen Poe story. At a little less than an hour, it's more than worth your time to give it a listen. This dramatization allows you to drift back to a time when horror was less about gore and more about getting inside your head to free your worst nightmares.

Disturbing

Brilliantly narrated. Disturbing and creepy as only Edgar Allen Poe’s can be. I love how descriptive is stories are.

Classic Poe with a great production behind it

The story is classic Poe. Wonderful and timeless it can be enjoyed by any and all. I find this rendition of it with music and sound effects to be a perfect addition to any library especially as we close in on Halloween. Full productions like this are also a great way to introduce kids into audiobooks as they find the music and sound effects to be more movie like and engaging for them. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

Horror Novella by Original Master of Macabre

Great performance by Kevin Theis. Poe does a good job and scene setting, and the horror is PG at best which makes it a good listen for middle readers.

Horrible Performance

The reader's performance unfortunately stood out more than anything to me, and not in a positive manner. I found it very difficult to clearly hear the words E. A. Poe wrote, due to the method the reader employed throughout the story. His theatric vocalizations had me stopping to find another, better read version of "The Fall of The House of Usher." I will never forget to listen to the "sample" again. The reader needed to drop the dramatic intonations and simply tell the story. Poe's works in themselves are works of art, they need little embellishment to stand out. To actually understand "The Fall of The House of Usher" I definitely recommend you do not waste your money on this book.

Great story, horrible performance

There was no intention to the tone of the narrator, it feels as if he’s screaming every sentence. I regret using a credit for this.

Best Read on a Stormy Night in Surround Sound

This reminded me of something I long forgotten; records of Poe’s stories from my early education, and I loved every second of it. When the story is right, I have come to truly appreciate the enhanced versions with extra creaks and moans. Those that frequent my reviews will recall me mentioning that another narrator practically made a character out of a door just from the added effects. This was no different.

I do not recall reading this story after listening to it this time. I’m sure I must have read it at some point as I love all things Poe. I think that is more a testament as to how much a story can change depending on the way it is presented. This story (as well as most of Poe’s work I’d imagine) lends itself very well to the added effects, especially since part of the story revolves around that very issue. Mr. Theis has done a marvelous job bringing Poe’s work to life. I can’t wait to hear more.

I was provided with a free copy of this audio book for my honest review. The views expressed here are entirely my own.
