As spiritualism reaches its fevered pitch at the dawn of the twentieth century, a Scottish girl crosses the veil to unlock a powerful connection within an infamous asylum in this thrillingly atmospheric, exquisitely evocative exploration of feminine rage and agency for fans of Sarah Penner, Alice Hoffman, and Hester Fox.

I do enjoy a bit of well-deserved female justice!!! Listened to this story in one sitting.

Love a good seance story

1860s and 1900 meet in neutral 3rd space while under hypnosis. 1860 woman is in an asylum; 1900 is a girl with a gift for card-reading whose father and subsequent “handlers” use for trick seances. Both characters are well done. The seedy side of medical experimentation using hypnosis balances well with the seediness of the fortune-telling/seance circuits.

Generally well-written, although I prefer a less straightforward style; more adjectives and metaphors to give me a better sense of place. What is the difference in quality between the infirmary and general pop? Why is every house set up for a seance simply grand? What makes them so? It has to be more than velvet. What is the quality of 1900s connection to the island house?

No mistakes that make me want to scream and throw the book, although I believe that tree should get a story of its own (I really thought it was a setup for more, and am disappointed there wasn’t more).

Very good listen - quality similar to “Little” and “That Bonesetter Woman”

Great Story, & VG Writing,Tho Palate Somewhat Limited
