Superb economics lessons from Scripture

Left me wanting more. This book is a fine exegesis of 13 parables, with clear explanations and applications for today. Fr. Sirico has done a service by showing how Christian principles work in a free market.

Interesting concept, nice try

I have long had a fascination for the economic dimensions of ancient belief systems, from the Abrahamic trio of Christianity, Judaism and Islam, to Taoism and beyond.

There is no question the worldly wisdom here is well and neatly (and laudably) stated. I wish most Americans had these words and this ethos internalized. But here I think if the causation arrow is not fully backwards (the Gospel parables using sensible worldly economic examples, understandable to regular people, as pointers to the otherworldly fullness of eternal life, this being an attempt at the opposite), it is somewhat skewed, in something of a wrestling match with the (for me) obvious intent of the scriptures. Yes, there is a sense (and much imagery) of sound economic sense found throughout the scriptures, and even a model of other-worldly things (such as ultimate judgment, a sort of balance sheet) in scriptural stories. These sides weave together in fascinating ways, and this book helps to explore and ponder that. I do accept, perhaps in confirmation of my prejudices, the author's point that these stories do not represent a radical (as in Marxist) redistributional model.

Nevertheless, again, I think the balance here goes toward trying to shoehorn something beyond our imagination into something closer to the ideas of Adam Smith. Just my opinion! But I rate the book as a worthwhile thought exercise.
