Resumen del Editor

Two backcountry skiers find the body of a young woman embedded in the ice of a remote mountain creek. All through the night, police work with arc lights and chain saws to dig her out. But identification doesn't take as long. Abbie Cooper is wanted for murder and acts of eco-terrorism, and her picture is on law-enforcement computers all across America. But just how did she die? And what was the trail of events that led this joyous, golden child of a loving family so tragically astray?

In a journey of discovery and redemption, from the streets of New York to the daunting grandeur of the Rocky Mountains, The Divide delves into the dynamics of a fractured family and their struggle with the pain of lost happiness. Electrifying and heartbreaking, master storyteller Nicholas Evans' new novel delivers an extraordinary tale about the timeless power of nature, and about the yearnings, hopes, and disillusionments that connect, and separate, all men and women.

Reseñas de la Crítica

“While Evans reveres his backdrop, he ultimately is more interested in getting the reader to go inward than outside. In Evans’s hands, that's a journey worth taking.” (USA Today)

“When the frozen body of a young woman is discovered in a remote creek in the Rocky Mountains, the heartrending story of a family in crisis begins to unfold. Reaching back in time, members of the seemingly perfect Cooper family present their version of the events, emotions, and twists of fate that forever altered the benign course of their collective lives. Sure to be a runaway success, this lyrical novel runs the gamut from devastation to despair to deliverance.” (Booklist)

Awesome

This was one of those books that I couldn't turn off. The reader was excellent. The story, primarily a love story of sorts, was so compelling that it drew you into the characters and the messes they made of their lives. Nichlas Evans did a fantastic job - can't wait for his next book!

A Decent Listen

This was my first listen of a book by Nicholas Evans. My perception before (and after) reading this book is that he is a serial writer like Danielle Steele. Cranks out a large number of very similar style books.

The story was good. Light reading fare and certainly nothing I could not live for having not heard it. The narration (as with anything by Scott Brick) was fantastic.

So this is a good summer read. Nothing too heavy, but enough to keep you interested.

A beautifully written, very haunting story

Would you listen to The Divide again? Why?

This book is the background story of a young girl who is found dead by two skiiers on a crisp winter morning. It's extremely well written and very well rounded in its exploration of each character effected by the story of the girl in the years leading up to her death. The narrator does a very good job, drawing you into the story and bringing the authors words to life.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. Especially toward the end. You can see the mistakes being made by the girl as she makes them and you want to shake sense into her as you wait for the repercussions of her actions.

Engrossing and Moving

This was a fascinating telling of a good family, apparently living the American dream, until things get seriously off track. Each point of view shows another angle of a complex situation. Even when some of the characters infuriated me at times, it was the author's skill that made them very real portrayals of flesh and blood people. The ending was sad, but satisfying. Great book and GREAT narrator!

Whoa . . . . . heart wrenching

I had a love hate relationship with this book! Although it could be a little slow in places, it was wonderful and heart wrenching all in one! Even though you know the ending before you get to it, I just kept pulling for the main character. This is one I'll listen to over and over again.

Terrific Story

I loved it. Yes, as always, Scott Brick was great but this was a terrific story that made me feel entrenched in the characters lives. Don't miss this one. Believeable and well written.

THE DIVIDE - Continental, divorce, & choice

A story that reminds me of American Pastoral, where a daughter becomes radicalized and causes the death of an innocent during an action, in this case, a Monkey Wrench Gang environmental protest. Published in 2005, THE DIVIDE is only slightly dated because it deals primarily with fracking which is still a terrible environmental practice.
Evans is an excellent painter with words. He has a deft hand with place, atmosphere, and characters. Abby and her brother Josh, her love interests Rolf the Eco-warrior and Ty the Montana cowboy, along with her parents Ben and Sarah are brought alive and The DIvide - as in the Continental Divide, the split between parents, and the difference in Rolf and Ty is clearly wrought out in the prose.
It all comes to a violent end in a very remote cabin in the Montana wilderness.
Definitely worth a listen.

A touching novel I couldn't put down

This "mystery" offers depth of characters not often found in the typical cops versus bad guys or modern detective novel. Even though Abbie is dead from day 1 in the novel, she comes alive as a real person, as do all the other inhabitants of the novel. It is an excellent read, one that will stick with you.
