In New York Times bestselling author Marcia Muller's captivating mystery, private detective Sharon McCone's investigation hits closer to home than ever before?Ķ

The Color of Fear

When a knock on the door in the middle of the night wakes Sharon, she's wholly unprepared for the horrifying news: her father has been the victim of a vicious, racially-motivated attack.

A nationally recognized Shoshone artist, Elwood had been visiting Sharon for the holidays, browsing for gifts in San Francisco's exclusive Marina district when he was set upon by a mob of angry young men. Now he lies in a coma, hovering between life and death.

With little progress on the investigation from the overworked, short-handed police, Sharon resolves to track down Elwood's attackers herself. But when Sharon begins receiving hate-filled, racist threats from a shadowy group, it becomes clear that her pursuit of justice may be putting her own life in jeopardy...

First, I love Marcia Muller. Even a middle-of-the-road book of hers is far superior to most other mystery writers' efforts. Sharon McCone is getting a wee bit tired, and the details of running her large agency are taking her away from her best gig-detecting. The timely topic of racial bigotry and violence doesn't quite fit in smoothly, although there is plenty of basis. Those who haven't had the pleasure of reading all umpty McCone stories should enjoy this one. Those of us long-time readers may grumble a bit.
One very nice improvement over the last Audible is the narration! This is far superior. Thanks for giving us a good narrator again!

Enjoyable Sharon McCone lacks sizzle of earlier novels

I've listened to/read most of Marcia Muller's book and enjoyed them. But this one is jamming her political leanings down her throat. There's barely a 5 minute period that she's not mentioning racism, primarily against Native Americans. I understand there are a lot of social problems, but I would like to escape into books. This one makes me want to unplug it and delete it because she just doesn't let up. I may not be able to finish it.

Quite depressing and political
