The H.P. Lovecraft Historical Society has produced the definitive audio recording of Lovecraft's collaboration tales. These are not dramatizations like our Dark Adventure Radio Theatre - rather, this is an audiobook of the stories, in all-new, never-before-heard recordings made by the HPLHS' own Andrew Leman and Sean Branney exclusively for this collection.

Working from texts prepared by Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, this collection features stories HPL wrote with other authors and includes, “The Curse of Yig” (with Zealia Bishop), “The Horror in the Museum”, “The Mound”, “The Night Ocean” (with R.H. Barlow), and many others. All tales include original music by HPLHS composer Troy Sterling Nies. This collection features 33 stories adding up to more than 23 hours of Lovecraftian listening fun, professionally performed and recorded for your enjoyment.

Interested in Lovecraft? Enter his world! HPLHS has put their indelible mark on the man's masterpieces forevermore. As a Star Trek fan I would compare narrator Branney's voice to a husky Doug Jones (as Saru, the best character on the otherwise drab Discovery), and narrator Leman's voice to a bittersweet LeVar Burton, legendary Geordi LaForge from The Next Generation. This is essential listening, the greatest of all the excellent HPLHS releases.

The One to Get. (But Get Them All)

The disclaimer is pretty spot on with the issues in this story. I found a lot of the stories fairly boring but did think it’s funny how often he will work his creations within a story for someone else. There were a few interesting ones and few that had good ideas but drug on too long. The Last Test was particularly boring and drug on for ages.

Yikes

I have enjoyed HP Lovecraft since I was a little kid in the early 80s, exposed initially through somewhat playing dungeons and dragons (we didn’t really play that much it was mostly just a catalyst for late night conversation/imagination and a lot of junk food between friends at sleepovers) but for years/decades I felt like I was the only person who liked the guy.

It has been fantastic to watch Lovecraft influences become more popular and I enjoy digging into his really interesting personal story – sidenote HPL HS has an amazing gift tedious podcast called “voluminous“ which reads all of Lovecraft letters which I found interesting, many including the performers might find it maddening. I do find it bizarre and distressing that so many people in the age of perennial outrage, race obsession, historical rewriting, and general woke nonsense I’ve tried to posthumously cancel HP Lovecraft because of his use which in modern context are pretty awful. Since his views were pretty well in line with President Wilson I’m not terribly shocked other than being shocked at the ignorance of the perennially/selectively outraged crowd. Lovecraft existed not especially long after the Civil War, was from a wealthy elite progressive New England family although broke himself and kind of resentful of it, tragic story regarding his father, creepy level of influence from his female relatives who raised him, and pre-World War II. Unlike most of the country, he was an atheist, nihilist, big fan of Nietzsche/Darwin and had the expected bleak, meaningless, humans as animals, etc. world view. This bleak meaningless worldview is actually what makes his stories so good.

I’ve read or listened to all of his more famous works so this book is a fantastic exploration of obscure or collaboration work he did and I appreciate that HPLHS has continued to be such staunch fans and supporters of Lovecraft even in the face of ever present threat of cancellation from the low IQ left side of society. I’m certain that they personally professionally have taken a lot of spears and arrows but in the end, good literature is good literature and having a rational/factual view of history and culture is always going to win. This is a great book for people who are super into HP Lovecraft and it will probably annoy people who are ambivalent or slightly into Lovecraft.

HPLHS typical excellent work

Another excellent work by Andrew Leman and Sean Branney. I heard someone say they could listen to Andrew read the phonebook and it would give them the chills, and I think that's probably true! These guys are fantastic! They go to very great lengths to make sure everything is read well and pronounced correctly.

And one of my favorite things about their stuff... it actually has a table of contents! I have seen many other audiobook collections where even though the chapters all have titles (especially if there was a print version), in Audible it's all Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. Makes it very difficult to find what you're looking for. No so for these guys! They made sure everything was titled, so you can easily find what stories you're looking for.

Excellent! And it has a Table of Contents!

I recommend the performances. This collection is best for Lovecraft aficionados interested in just about anything he wrote.

The Complete Stories would be better for readers new to Lovecraft.

Go, HPLHS! You do great work.

Most were decent enough, but some stood out as genuine Yog-Sothothery such as: The Horror in the Museum, The Last Test, The Electric Excecutioner, Til a' the Seas, and the Tree on the Hill all come to mind. The Night Ocean was good in a different way, it struck a more poetic and colorful chord than usual, altogether quite good.
