The Cold Winter is a timely story that addresses the effects of a grid-down cyber attack on the residents of a small village in Ohio. The added twist of a raging snow storm that pounds the region mercilessly creates "the cold winter".
The Vesper family lives in a small village near Columbus and has prepared some, but not enough. Survival is their challenge, but they refuse to climb out of the aftermath by stepping on those in need. Their goal is to help every family that finds the way to their doorstep, although violence eventually comes knocking.
The looming question eventually becomes apparent: Will the spring thaw really bring the crisis to an end, or is it just the beginning?

Several great ideas for survival also help readers to learn potentially great plans. Great book!!!

Anyway, this book has an amateur-ish feel, but is enjoyable nonetheless.
The Good:
Excellent character development and world building. Good narrator with distinctive voices for each character. Good use of real-life locations. Abruptly kills off characters. Several seemingly practical and mutually acceptable ways to interact with strangers in high threat/dangerous/post apocalyptic situations/environments
The Bad:
Lack of firearms familiarity (i.e. - Terminology is wrong, doesn't understand real life physical affects and physics of bullets, descriptions of weapons and calibers), doesn't understand the different levels and capabilities of body armor, the audio sounds "tinny" throughout most of the book, jarring transitions between main characters copping fantasy world and his chaotic reality
The Indifferent:
HEAVY on Religion and conspiracy theories; Right-Wing "Prepper" scenarios with what seems like a Left-Wing approach to everything
Overall, I enjoyed this book for what it is and look forward to the next book in the series.
Not Bad, Not Great, but Enjoyable.
