Resumen del Editor

How two young children survived one of the most treacherous stories in recent history....

Do you often find yourself wondering if the Wild West was really all that wild? Perhaps you’ve seen a few movies and heard some stories, but you feel like there’s more going on here than these dramatic displays of borderline fiction. Or maybe you’re a bit of a historian. And you’re simply looking to learn more about one of the most powerfully informative (and incredibly sad) tales of the Old Wild West. Whatever the case may be, the massacre of the Oatman family is something worthy of historical focus.

Just imagine fighting for your family’s survival, barely scraping by, and then watching everything you own to be taken from you. Royce Oatman experienced such a fate, and although it’s horrific what happened to the Oatman family, it’s not the whole story. The Wild West, a time in America between 1850 and 1910, is often overdramatized in Hollywood, which does a splendid job of making the Indians seem like savages and the cowboys come across as heroic gunslingers. While at times this may be true, at other times, it’s not. We’re all free to study and analyze the history books at our own discretion, drawing our own conclusions. But it’s important that we look at things from as objective a perspective as possible.

With a bit of insight into the Native American culture, paired with a larger understanding of how the settlers of the west actually lived, you'll be able to decipher what happened to the Oatman family of your own accord, empowering an honest understanding of this history. In The Captivity of the Oatman Girls, you’ll discover:

  • Powerful insight into the truth of the relations between the settlers and the Plains Indians of North America
  • Why the actions of the colonists in the late 18th century bordered genocide - and how this shifted the landscape forever
  • Why retaliation and vengeance created an exponential rise in violence - and why much of this could have been avoided

Fascinating!

This is a bit of history I was ignorant about - I'll admit. And the story is compelling and interesting. You will 100% be entertained and come away with lots of new tidbits about history. Such a smart context to learn something new. Great narration as well. Recommend!

"Pretty Good"

The history and experience of all these real human beings was certainly compelling. The storytelling seemed somehow disconnected chapter to chapter.

Please bear with me for a brief analogy:

Tim McCarver who used to call baseball games for the Mets, had an odd way of describing the same action from three similar perspectives. A routine double play became 12-15 minutes of retelling the same fact. From the shortstop, then from the 2nd baseman, then the 1st. And then in reverse order. And then from two out of the three.

This story was very much like that. It was a 3 hour and 33 minute listen, but I think it could've been 1 hour and 11 minutes. So I can honestly say this story was pretty good. The narrator did what was required pretty well. For what it's worth, overall I think the late Mr. McCarver would've enjoyed the style in which it was told.

Unexpected but Fantastic

This book was a very pleasant surprise! It explores more than just the story of the Oatman girls. I think it came across as relatively objective, and had an important overall message that is very relevant today.

Great Listen!

It was very interesting to learn about the west in the 1850's and how far from what we see in the movies. This book was really well researched and I loved the narrator for this book. Closing my eyes and listening really made me feel like I was experiencing the story.

An eye-opening historical account

Fascinating story about the abduction of the Oatman children. The audiobook does a good job of portraying their plight juxta positioned against the unfair treatment of the settlers in exploiting native Americans. If you’re a history buff like me, then this audiobook provides an informative and enlightening listen into a transformational part of American history.
