NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The breathtaking conclusion to Philip Pullman’s landmark new trilogy The Book of Dust! Return to the world of His Dark Materials and discover what fate has in store for Lyra, “one of fantasy’s most indelible heroines” (The New York Times Magazine).

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Horn Book, The Boston Globe Blue Ribbon Awards List

“Pullman’s abilities as a storyteller are stupendous, and on full display.”—The Atlantic

“Tremendously entertaining.”—Slate

Lyra Silvertongue is alone in a city haunted by daemons, searching for her beloved Pan. Malcolm Polstead isn’t far behind, searching for Lyra. And they are both racing toward the desert of Karamakan, following the trail of roses said to hold the secret of Dust.

Their allies and enemies are converging on the mysterious red building at the heart of the desert: Marcel Delamare and the military might of the Magisterium; the radical Men from the Mountains; scientists, scholars, and spies; troops of witches and other people of the air. And awaiting them all is a previously unseen and chilling new threat that will change everything.

The intertwining odysseys of Malcolm and Lyra, their journeys both internal and external, will test their limits and challenge even their most dearly held beliefs.

As ever, Philip Pullman is using the language of fantasy to illuminate our world and to explore the deepest questions of what it means to be alive and awake to all the splendors and horrors around us. The extraordinary novels of The Book of Dust speak powerfully to today’s readers and will take their place alongside the forever-favorites of His Dark Materials.

When Covid hit and I hadn't seen the third volume of Pullman's "The Book of Dust," I had a feeling I wouldn't see it for a long time yet. A part of me worried that I'd *never* see it.

I searched on a regular basis for any news and was both thrilled and relieved when I saw it was scheduled for publication some 8 years after "The Secret Commonwealth."

It was worth the wait. Pullman has said the book took a lot out of him, and I believe it, because he clearly put so much into it. It's exciting, entertaining, thoughtful and insightful.

The overarching theme about the importance and meaning of not just imagination, but consciousness itself, couldn't be more relevant today. His skillful, nuanced critique of so many distressing aspects of today's world were illuminating (and troubling).

I will say that there is a *lot* to keep track of in this volume, the longest of both trilogies. Many characters, many plot threads, and I confess that if I let it lie for a few days I had to work to remember who was with who, where, and why.

But Pullman masterfully keeps it all together in the end.

If anything, I'm even more impressed by Michael Sheen's astounding narration. I read the previous five volumes in "His Dark Materials" and "The Book of Dust," so was unacquainted with how brilliantly this actor rendered Pullman's countless unique characters Sheen notes in the post-ending interview included in the audio book that he nearly wore out his throat trying to capture the eagle-lion voices of the gryphons.

There was just one slight miss in character voices, but holy cow, that means he's batting around 98% I think. To make each voice so distinctive and recognizable is a talent indeed. I'll have to see if he's done other books besides Pullman's.

I loved this book. While I still prefer to read (physical) books, I must say choosing to listen this time turned out to make the experience even better.

Kudos to Pullman and Sheen. Kudos to Lyra and Pan! Malcolm and Asta! And all the rest.

Brilliant, entertaining and brilliantly read

Beautiful story, world, characters and ideas! I hope Pullman will write supplementary stories to tie up all those loose threads we have at the end. Overall a wonderful story.

Captivating!

The Book of Dust trilogy is literature at its finest! This book picks up right where the last book ended. It sort of feels like The Secret Commonwealth and The Rose Field were one book that got split in two. If you liked the other books in the series, then you probably don’t need to read reviews to get this audiobook. Michael Sheen does such a great job! I just read both trilogies in chronological order as they happen in the story. Even though the readers change, it was a fun way to hear the stories. You can really hear/see the evolution of Pullman as a writer. His Dark Materials was more of a youthful fantasy story as opposed to The Book of Dust which feels much more grownup - like Lyra. This was my first listen/read of The Rose Field and I found it extremely satisfying.

A Great End to an Amazing Trilogy!

So, tell me why? The question came up for me so many times reading through listening to this book. Of course, some questions were laid out so well by Philip Pullman, and answered powerfully. some questions were my own and fell on deaf pages. Alas. I can only only say, why? Why? Why?

Grown Up!

I LOVED the first three books. They are probably my favorite book series. The world that Philip Pullman builds is incredible. The Belle Savage was OK, I found it a little too long and slightly confusing, but I thought The Secret Commonwealth was mostly excellent and was getting this trilogy back on track. Then I read the conclusion.

Without giving too much away, there’s lots of plot points that go nowhere, things that just do not get explained, the ending feels just so incredibly rushed and slightly disconnected, and when the narrator said “the end”, I thought I had accidentally skipped ahead a couple of hours. When I realized that no, this is actually how this entire series concludes, I just sat there in stunned disappointment.

The most frustrating part was how the book kept setting your expectations for something that never happens.

I can’t believe I’m giving the story in this series a 2/5…

A disappointing conclusion to an amazing series
