NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The breathtaking conclusion to Philip Pullman’s landmark new trilogy The Book of Dust! Return to the world of His Dark Materials and discover what fate has in store for Lyra, “one of fantasy’s most indelible heroines” (The New York Times Magazine).

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR: Horn Book, The Boston Globe Blue Ribbon Awards List

“Pullman’s abilities as a storyteller are stupendous, and on full display.”—The Atlantic

“Tremendously entertaining.”—Slate

Lyra Silvertongue is alone in a city haunted by daemons, searching for her beloved Pan. Malcolm Polstead isn’t far behind, searching for Lyra. And they are both racing toward the desert of Karamakan, following the trail of roses said to hold the secret of Dust.

Their allies and enemies are converging on the mysterious red building at the heart of the desert: Marcel Delamare and the military might of the Magisterium; the radical Men from the Mountains; scientists, scholars, and spies; troops of witches and other people of the air. And awaiting them all is a previously unseen and chilling new threat that will change everything.

The intertwining odysseys of Malcolm and Lyra, their journeys both internal and external, will test their limits and challenge even their most dearly held beliefs.

As ever, Philip Pullman is using the language of fantasy to illuminate our world and to explore the deepest questions of what it means to be alive and awake to all the splendors and horrors around us. The extraordinary novels of The Book of Dust speak powerfully to today’s readers and will take their place alongside the forever-favorites of His Dark Materials.

I wish that I could give more than five stars for the story and narration. I will miss Lyra and all of the other characters

I was sorry that this series ended

I love Pullman’s writing and I love him for creating this universe and the characters in it. I adore HDM and thought La Belle Sauvage was an excellent new edition to the story. The Secret Commonwealth was a little awkward. It had a lot of work to do in bringing us up-to-date with Lyra as an adult and the environment she is now living in.

I hoped that The Rose Field would level things out and leave us with the same kind of beautiful ending we got with The Amber Spyglass. That doesn’t mean I expected it to be anything like that book, nor did I necessarily expect every loose end tied up. But I definitely didn’t expect that essentially every single loose end would be left unresolved, which is what happened. There were some great moments, and some interesting character interactions, but a lot of it felt stifled and almost as if the characters were more juvenile than the kids from the original series. Lyra was always rough around the edges but it doesn’t really seem like she’s grown very much since TAS ended. She seems so much less sure of herself too. Still tenacious and brave, but I expected to see more wisdom in her. Especially after the witch told her that Malcolm is “younger than she is”.

I don’t know, I wanted to love it and there are things about it that I did love. But this was ultimately a very unsatisfying conclusion to The Book of Dust. It meanders all over and never really gets anywhere. I guess it’s an allegory about being a grownup (and capitalism/consumerism run amok), but it’s a pretty depressing one.

Good but Unsatisfying

everything about this whole story is perfect. I cried when it ended. The character development especially in this last book was amazing.

best series ever

The story seemed all over the place, with interesting characters introduced and then abandoned. The end also dragged in the last two chapters. A real shame as I loved His Dark Materials, but I could not feel attached to this version of Lyra and how she had changed.

Not as good as His Dark Materials

I wish it wouldn’t end. Coming to the end of this series is bittersweet. This is my favorite book series of all time.

This is a beautiful, imaginative epic tale. The narration is incredible.
