Matthew is a normal 11-year-old boy living with his parents and little sister in Surrey. He's too old and sensible to have an imaginary friend really. Yet when Matthew's parents keep finding him talking and arguing with a strange presence whom Matthew calls Chocky, that's what they believe it must be…at first. But Chocky is oddly sinister, and keeps asking Matthew all sorts of complicated questions about the world and making him behave in unusual and erratic ways. Delmak-O is a dangerous planet. Though there are only 14 citizens, no one can trust anyone else and death can strike at any moment. The planet is vast and largely unexplored, populated mostly by gelatinous cube-shaped beings that give cryptic advice in the form of anagrams. Deities can be spoken to directly via a series of prayer amplifiers and transmitters, but they may not be happy about it. And the mysterious building in the distance draws all the colonists to it, but when they get there each sees a different motto on the front.

A hidden science fiction classic
An instant classic that I recommend to anyone wanting to get into hard science fiction. This is a fun and easy to enjoy story with a lot of actual science mixed into it. I highly recommend for anyone want to dip their toes into sci-fi.

Left awe struck
Great story and great performance.
I read this book based on a recommendation from another book, "A new science of heaven". I highly recommend reading it, because it makes this science fiction story, maybe not so fictitious after all.

Interesting ideas and snapshot of the 1950s
Rereading this science fiction novel 35 years after I first read it, alot of social nuances jumped out at me that didn’t jump out at me before. The story is reminiscent of some of the Gene Roddenberry Star Trek plots but with actual science underpinning the plot development. The author was an astronomer so it makes for an interesting read if you appreciate science fiction with science.
