Acerca de esta escucha
After the Johnson family learns the youngest daughter is pregnant and unwed, they devise an elaborate plan to keep it a secret from the outside world. Part of that plan includes a lavish lie which is designed to make the scheme seem more believable. Once the child was born, however, this lie would not only come true, but change the lives of every member of the family.

Historia
Now a middle-aged woman facing inevitable old age, Linda relishes reminiscing about her childhood and what people commonly refers to as the good old days. This is especially prevalent when she gets together with her siblings and their now extended families. On one particular Saturday afternoon’s visit to her mother’s townhouse, which is located on what was once the McDowell’s Farm, Linda is reminded of the events that transpired there when she was just a young girl growing up in the '60s.

Celie has grown up poor in rural Georgia, despised by society and abused by her own family. She strives to protect her sister, Nettie, from a similar fate, and while Nettie escapes to a new life as a missionary in Africa, Celie is left behind without her best friend and confidante, married off to an older suitor, and sentenced to a life alone with a harsh and brutal husband. In an attempt to transcend a life that often seems too much to bear, Celie begins writing letters to God. The great scholar, W. E. B. Du Bois, once wrote about the problem of race in America, and what he called “Double Consciousness,” a sensitivity that every African American possesses in order to survive. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois’s words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans—the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother Pearl, the descendant of enslaved Georgians and tenant farmers—Ailey carries Du Bois’s problem on her shoulders.

Historia
In the fading town of Rooster, Texas, all that's really left is a service station, a church…and the Banty House, a long-ago Depression-era brothel. For more than seventy-five years, Betsy, Connie, and Kate Carson have called their mama's house a home. The three eccentric sisters get by just fine with their homemade jams and jellies, a little moonshine on the side, and big hearts always open to strangers. Like Ginger Andrews.

Sean was a seventh-grade drop-out, a dishwasher then a construction worker to help his mother and sister scrape by, and a self-described "nobody with a sad story behind him." Yet he cannot deny the glimmers of life's goodness even amid its rough edges. Such goodness becomes even harder to deny when Sean meets the love of his life at a fried chicken church potluck, and harder still when his lifelong love of storytelling leads him to stages across the southeast, where he is known and loved as "Sean of the South."

Historia
Born to a poor couple who were tenant farmers on a plantation in Mississippi, Anne Moody lived through some of the most dangerous days of the pre-civil rights era in the South. The week before she began high school came the news of Emmet Till's lynching. Before then, she had "known the fear of hunger, hell, and the Devil. But now there was…the fear of being killed just because I was black." In that moment was born the passion for freedom and justice that would change her life.

Interesting Novella
The Angel Years is the story of three sisters in a rural community in the 50s. The youngest daughter becomes pregnant, and it's necessary to hide the pregnancy. When the child is born, it's evident she's special.
I've read a few books by this author, and his typical characters are salt of the earth people, characters we'd meet in our day to day lives. I always enjoy the way the author brings the setting and era to life, especially for someone like me who never experienced it personally. The characters in this book are compelling, and you want to cheer for them or shake them, depending on who they are. I finished the story in one sitting and I'd recommend it to others.
The narration was well done, with the perfect accent for the characters. I requested a copy of the audiobook, and I'm voluntarily leaving a review.

The Angel Years
I have listened to quite a few of John Isaac Jones’s audiobooks, and I am never disappointed. His stories are so well written, I feel like I am right there watching everything happen. The Angel Years is no exception.
Not only is his writing exquisite, but Mr. Jones also finds the perfect narrator for each of his stories. Susan Marlowe’s performance definitely added to my enjoyment.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
