Acerca de esta escucha
Faith Brown is a poor colored girl from Elizabeth City, North Carolina and the oldest of six small children. And In the winter of 1948, a helpless seven-year-old, watches intently from the front room window as her 26-year-old mother, Matty, walks swiftly away, into the unforgiving darkness. And now that Matty has made her escape, the old blue house on Butler lane, will never be the same.
Faith’s wake-up call to the harsh realities of her existence arrives without warning. However, her tears, trials, and tribulations, will soon cover a multitude of miles and pain. Why did her mommy leave? Will she now be a motherless child? Was it her daddy’s fault? Who’s going to protect her and her siblings from the shadows of the night? Faith’s desire to find out why, is a seed that will eventually grow in multiple directions. The remedy to her plight may reveal itself in time but the cost of uncovering her truth will not be free.
The 1960s arrive and Faith’s courage and willingness to fight will soon lead her beyond the city limits of her small town. Her travels to the north will be filled with both smiles and cries. Along the way, Faith’s metamorphosis will happen gradually. But will it ever settle her restless soul? And as she struggles to carry her cross beyond the finish line, she will encounter a number of compelling characters.
As the decades of the '70s, '80s, and '90s rapidly expire, Faith’s life in the north will offer its share of adversity. Her experiences with poverty, violence, sex, happiness, heartbreak and love, will forever shape her view of the world. Faith’s wheel of misfortune will spin at its own wretched pace. And In the end, Faith’s determination to trek out of the darkness will underscore an authentic display of internal fortitude and survival.

The great scholar, W. E. B. Du Bois, once wrote about the problem of race in America, and what he called “Double Consciousness,” a sensitivity that every African American possesses in order to survive. Since childhood, Ailey Pearl Garfield has understood Du Bois’s words all too well. Bearing the names of two formidable Black Americans—the revered choreographer Alvin Ailey and her great grandmother Pearl, the descendant of enslaved Georgians and tenant farmers—Ailey carries Du Bois’s problem on her shoulders.

Historia
Juleena always knew she wanted to go away to college; she just didn't know it would be in New York. That was until she met and fell in love with her boyfriend, Mooski, a few summers ago. Juleena knew she wanted to be close to him, so she applied to every college possible in the tri-state area just so she could be close to him. Ju's plan was to always attend NYU, so when she got accepted into Fordham University, she felt herself straying from her life's path. Juleena thought moving to New York would make her and Mooski closer. Instead, the two of them couldn't be further apart.

Historia
Aida Rodriguez has, to put it mildly, lived a whirlwind life. Her rags-to-riches story is mind-blowing: She was kidnapped as a child by her mother in the Dominican Republic and brought to the US. She was later kidnapped again by her grandmother and uncle and moved from New York to Florida. As an adult, she ended a difficult marriage and endured homelessness with her children in Los Angeles. But through it all she never lost her sense of humor.
