In this evening at Symphony Space, critic Katie Roiphe interviews her mother, Anne, about Art and Madness, which describes the elder Roiphe's life as a muse for male writers in 1950s New York. After reading from her work, Anne discusses what it was like to live in a time when women were expected to sideline their own ambitions, and why she accepted the idea of helping men write rather than be a writer herself. The result is an illuminating look at a particular time in America's cultural history, and the healing power of telling our stories.
