Acerca de esta escucha
Carl Hiaasen doesn't like the Walt Disney Company. A native of Florida, Hiaasen comes by his dislike for Disney honestly. He has witnessed the relentless success of the Disney machine firsthand with the development of Disney World and other properties around Orlando.
In Team Rodent: How Disney Devours the World, Hiaasen paints a witty and sarcastic portrait of a company that can control the press, manipulate local governments, and—because it's Disney—get away with it.
Entertaining and enlightening, Team Rodent takes a critical view of the Disney corporate giant, tracing its destructive impact on the environment, American culture, and the world.

At the beginning of his career, Joseph Campbell developed a lasting fascination with the cultures of the Far East, and explorations of Buddhist and Hindu philosophy later became recurring motifs in his vast body of work. However, Campbell had to wait until middle age to visit the lands that inspired him so deeply. In 1954, he took a sabbatical from his teaching position and embarked on a year-long voyage through India, Thailand, Cambodia, Burma, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and finally Japan.

Grange, Florida, is famous for its miracles - the weeping fiberglass Madonna, the Road-Stain Jesus, the stigmata man. And now it has JoLayne Lucks, unlikely winner of the state lottery. Unfortunately, JoLayne's winning ticket isn't the only one. The other belongs to Bodean Gazzer and his raunchy sidekick, Chub, who believe they're entitled to the whole $28 million jackpot. And they need it quickly, to start their own underground militia before NATO troops invade America. But JoLayne Lucks has her own plans for the Lotto money - an Eden-like forest in Grange must be saved from strip-malling.

Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

Andrew Yancy—late of the Miami Police and soon-to-be-late of the Monroe County sheriff’s office—has a human arm in his freezer. There’s a logical (Hiaasenian) explanation for that, but not for how and why it parted from its shadowy owner. Yancy thinks the boating-accident/shark-luncheon explanation is full of holes, and if he can prove murder, the sheriff might rescue him from his grisly Health Inspector gig (it’s not called the roach patrol for nothing).

Originally drawn to the game by his father, Carl Hiaasen wisely quit golfing in 1973. But some ambitions refuse to die, and as the years - and memories of shanked 7-irons - faded, it dawned on Carl that there might be one thing in life he could do better in middle age than he could as a youth. So gradually he ventured back to the dreaded driving range, this time as the father of a five-year-old son -and also as a grandfather.

"This commencement address will never be given, because graduation speakers are supposed to offer encouragement and inspiration. That's not what you need. You need a warning." So begins Carl Hiaasen's attempt to prepare young men and women for their future. And who better to warn them about their precarious paths forward than Carl Hiaasen?

This is the authoritative, “deeply reported” (The Wall Street Journal) account of an eighteen-month crisis in American democracy that will be seared into the country’s political memory for decades to come. With stunning, in-the-room detail, New York Times reporters Jonathan Martin and Alexander Burns show how both our political parties confronted a series of national traumas, including the coronavirus pandemic, the January 6 attack on the Capitol, and the political brinksmanship of President Biden’s first year in the White House.

God Save Texas is a journey through the most controversial state in America. It is a red state, but the cities are blue and among the most diverse in the nation. Oil is still king, but Texas now leads California in technology exports. Low taxes and minimal regulation has produced extraordinary growth, but also striking income disparities. Texas looks a lot like the America that Donald Trump wants to create. Texas native Lawrence Wright gives us a colorful, wide-ranging portrait of a state that not only reflects our country as it is, but as it may become.

We never know what will happen next in Florida. We know only that, any minute now, something will. Every few months, Dave Barry gets a call from some media person wanting to know, "What the hell is wrong with Florida?" Somehow, the state's acquired an image as a subtropical festival of stupid, and as a loyal Floridian, Dave begs to differ. Sure, there was the 2000 election. And people seem to take their pants off for no good reason. And it has flying insects the size of LeBron James. But it is a great state, and Dave is going to tell you why.

Historia
Ever since Donald Trump entered the presidential race - in a press conference attended by paid actors, in which he slandered Mexican immigrants - he has dominated headlines, becoming the unrestrained id at the center of one of the most bizarre and alarming elections in American history. It was not always so. In 1996, longtime New Yorker writer Mark Singer was conscripted by his editor to profile Donald Trump. At that time Trump was a mere Manhattan-centric megalomaniac, a failing casino operator mired in his second divorce.

As Oh, Florida! shows, it's both of these, and, more important, it's a Petri dish, producing trends that end up influencing the rest of the country. Without Florida there would be no NASCAR, no Bettie Page pinups, no Glenn Beck radio rants, no USA Today, no "Stand Your Ground" - you get the idea.

Disney's World Exposed!
Carl Hiaasen has turned my world upside down! His comments and anecdotes are so wild that I'm sure he's well on his way to achieving his Lifetime Ban from Disneyworld! I'd love to hear more and to delve more deeply. Who knew! It is all very interesting, but in the end, I'll still go to Disney World and enjoy every minute.

'Mauschwitz' (Mouschwitz? ) - whatever...
Whatever - potato / poe-tah-toe. A great read: informative, insightful, ironic, humorous (of course) expose'. Buy it!

Awful
Time and money I'll never get back. Wish I could go back in time to make myself skip this one.

Too bitter...
Although it was interesting to hear about the pervasive effect that Disney has on modern society, the overall bitter tone of the book was fairly annoying. This was intensified by the narrator, who tended to read the more bitter passages in a whining voice. This is clearly not an example of objective reporting. Regardless, I found much of the information to be quite intriguing, especially in regards to Disney's many failed ventures and in describing the political structure of the company.

Audio
The actual audio recording (not performance) is a little odd for this one…. Not sure if that was an intentional choice to make it sound old and worn out. Just a heads up.

Always wondered…
Wish there were more stories in this topic and that this one was more in-depth but understandably, a tightly guarded “kingdom”. Reading was lacking depth and emotion but Hiaasen is always a great story teller.

Terrible technical delivery
While the content of this book is good, the delivery is terrible. It sounds like the narrator is using a 1960’s microphone or is speaking through a VOIP connection – and this is downloading the book at the best quality level. While the book is cheap with only 2 audio chapters, wait until it’s on sale and then don’t expect much.

love CH!
however, the recording quality of this WDW rant is so terrible that it took away from the fun. This is not investigative journalism but rather a tongue and cheek poke at WDW and some really awful things they've done and continue to do to Florida. think Vegas and what the desert in Nevada used to be before the bulldozers arrived. it's fun and classic CH. All good for a romp, just buy a decent microphone if you're going to do audiobooks!

Excellent story…poor audio quality
This was an excellent story providing insight into the darker side of Disney. Highly recommend, however, the audio quality sounded like an old-timey radio program. Uncertain if that was intentional. The performance was great- only the audio was poor.

Little known tales well told and narrated
Big fan of Carl Hiaasen— this was one of his best. Enjoyable short story. Would like to see an updated expose’ of Disney.
