Resumen del Editor

From Charles J. Chaput, author of Living the Catholic Faith and Render unto Caesar, comes Strangers in a Strange Land, a fresh, urgent, and ultimately hopeful treatise on the state of Catholicism and Christianity in the United States. America today is different in kind, not just in degree, from the past. And this new reality is unlikely to be reversed. The reasons include, but aren't limited to, economic changes that widen the gulf between rich and poor, problems in the content and execution of the education system, the decline of traditional religious belief among young people, the shift from organized religion among adults to unbelief or individualized spiritualities, changes in legal theory and erosion in respect for civil and natural law, significant demographic shifts, profound new patterns in sexual behavior and identity, the growth of federal power and its disregard for religious rights, the growing isolation and elitism of the leadership classes, and the decline of a sustaining sense of family and community.

A must read in our chaotic times

This book offers a sobering appraisal of the times we live in but also optimism and concrete steps we can take on an individual basis to put the gospel to work in our lives

Great book, important topic

This is basically a better written Benedict Option. It doesn't have as many practical examples like Dreher's book did, but I think Chaput does a better job of discussing how we've gotten here and why we need to reject the culture and live Fuller Christian lives.

The narrator was great, he did a good job conveying the tone of the message.

Compelling and challenging

So richly written I've decided to actually order the book. These are important words for Christians to ponder today who see the culture and the world crumbling under the weight of moral relativism. He reminds us of a long heritage of struggle and witness... And that in Christ we can do what is needed. After all, this is the time in history that we have been given. Thank you Archbishop for your words to strengthen us for our work. Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle...

Captivating

As a young Catholic growing up in the United States, I very much enjoyed reading this book. The archbishop has an excellent grasp of the current state of America as well as a inspiring hope for the future and how to live out of Christ's love for us. recommend this book as both a sobering and yet encouraging raid

Really makes you think….

This book was eye-opening, and virtually prophetic. It has really inspired me to live my own faith more deeply, and to open the eyes of my children as well regarding where we’re headed as a nation and as a world, and give them that knowledge of knowing we are strangers in this land, and journeying home.

Totally for the “Catholic in the Pew”

Totally for the “Catholic in the Pew” and these post Christine times! Bishop Chaput presents a very readable book covering some of the most pressing issues in our country that is impacting our Catholic faith and relationship with God. The book also is written for the Catholic in the United States living in a Representative form of government and how being a Catholic and an US citizen is very compatible but also very, very fragile. Bishop Chaput uses historical and contemporary Christian thinkers, theologians, and religious to reinforce his presentation on our continual need for God in and about our lives and how the Catholic Church has assisted us throughout history in our understanding of the unconditional love God has for us humans. During these days there are crazy things going on and now more then ever we need God to help us make sense of it all give us a concrete reference point that does not change with the current fads and passing power games. Love his voice; cringe at pronunciation

Love the narrator’s voice but his pronunciation of names I know well had me wondering if Chaput was writing about someone else entirely.

This is a critically important book and one that I have read twice in several short years. This is the one that gives the Christian a plan of hope after reading “Out of the Ashes” and “The Benedict Option.”

One Mispronunciation

Archbishop Chaput quotes St. Augustine A LOT in this book and the narrator pronounces Augustine like the city in Florida, rather than the proper way when referring to the great saint.
