Diane "Sticks" Harsha
Acerca de esta escucha
How does a middle-aged wife, mother, and FBI agent pursue her dream of hiking 2,200 miles from Springer Mountain, Georgia, to Mount Katahdin, Maine?
Sticks Harsha balances her trekking ambitions against the responsibilities of daily life by hiking the Appalachian Trail in sections, one piece at a time.
Across a thirteen-year odyssey, Sticks discovers the best of America: the stunning beauty and diversity of nature, the quaintness of small towns, the quirkiness of fellow hikers, and, above all, the generosity of strangers.
She also discovers the disorientation of extreme thirst, the unpredictability of feral animals, and the dangers of life-threatening winds across knife-edge precipices in the isolated, mountainous wilds.
Follow this brilliantly written saga of one woman’s quest to hold onto her dream even as her body ages and her spirit tires, making her question whether she will ever finish her journey.
And whether she will truly make it back home.

It was 23 months after his accident, and Peter was still dealing with constant excruciating pain. He'd seen dozens of doctors and tried a myriad of medications, but nothing seemed to work. Faced with the impossible choice of suffering through the rest of his life, he had an unlikely epiphany, "If I could somehow hike 2,000 miles on the Appalachian Trail, then my leg will have to be better." He set a starting date three weeks out, cobbled together a novice's pack, and set off on a journey destined to change his life forever—though not exactly how he had envisioned it.

The Trail is a moving story of how nature helps us find what’s missing in our lives. The tale begins with Gil, who in the wake of his father’s death and recently fired from his job, agrees to accompany his father’s old hiking partner Syd on a month-long trek on the John Muir Trail. There’s just one problem: Gil hates camping and is woefully unprepared for the rigors of the journey. Moreover, he soon learns Syd may not survive the hike.

This is a terrific audiobook. It's interesting, well-written, and timely. It's the story of a textbook editor who retires, reads the popular book The Wild Effect and decides to hike the Appalachian Trail - and have an unexpected adventure! The tone is wry humor, tongue in cheek - the author has a great sense of humor, is perky, and as she learns in this adventure, is often in over her head! She is a very likeable character.

Historia
In 2003, software engineer David Miller left his job, family, and friends to hike 2,172 miles of the Appalachian Trail. AWOL on the Appalachian Trail is Miller’s account of this thru-hike from Georgia to Maine. Listeners are treated to rich descriptions of the Appalachian Mountains, the isolation and reverie, the inspiration that fueled his quest, and the rewards of taking a less conventional path through life. While this book abounds with introspection and perseverance, it also provides useful passages about hiking gear and planning.

But in this historic setting a store on the Appalachian Trail called Mountain Crossings the characters who show up are no fictional creations. Like any good drama, there are the good guys (and gals) and the weirdos, too. Some show up once (and that’s enough), and some appear again and again. But all are united by two things: the author’s story-capturing talent, and whatever it is that lures them to attempt (or conquer) a 2,200-mile path that climbs and plummets from Georgia to Maine.

Why would a middle-aged businessman who had never even spent the night outdoors, attempt to hike the entire Appalachian Trail? Bill Walker, a former commodities trader in Chicago and London, and an avid walker, had developed a virtual obsession to hike this historic 2,175 mile footpath in one hiking season. In the spring of 2005 he set off from his home state of Georgia, hoping to make it to Mount Katahdin in northern Maine before the arrival of winter.

At 22, Cheryl Strayed thought she had lost everything. In the wake of her mother's death, her family scattered and her own marriage was soon destroyed. Four years later, with nothing more to lose, she made the most impulsive decision of her life: to hike the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State - and to do it alone. She had no experience as a long-distance hiker, and the trail was little more than “an idea, vague and outlandish and full of promise.” But it was a promise of piecing back together a life that had come undone.

Historia
The conception and building of the Appalachian Trail is a story of unforgettable characters who explored it, defined it, and captured national attention by hiking it. From Grandma Gatewood—a mother of eleven who thru-hiked in canvas sneakers and a drawstring duffle—to Bill Bryson, author of the best-selling A Walk in the Woods, the AT has seized the American imagination like no other hiking path. The 2,000-mile-long hike from Georgia to Maine is not just a trail through the woods, but a set of ideas about nature etched in the forest floor.

The real stories behind the scenery of America’s national parks. For 12 years, Andrea Lankford lived in the biggest, most impressive national parks in the world, working a job she loved. She chaperoned baby sea turtles on their journey to sea. She pursued bad guys on her galloping patrol horse. She jumped into rescue helicopters bound for the heart of the Grand Canyon. She won arguments with bears. She slept with a few too many rattlesnakes. Hell yeah, it was the best job in the world! Fortunately, Andrea survived it.

Highly recommend
I actually looked forward to my 90-minute commute to and from work each day just because I got to listen to this book along the way. Now that I’ve finished it, I’m sad it’s over. Not sure what’s getting me into the car tomorrow. What a great escape while it lasted! Brought my mind right out onto the trail. Excellent imagery. Good pace. I stayed engaged and never caught my mind wandering. What an amazing person. This author has inspired me to get going on my next hike.

Best trail story yet
I have read and listened to a lot of hiking logs but this one is by far my favorite. The imagery is beautiful but also the accurate description of time on the trail is just perfect. Also the depiction of how off trail life has such a profound effect on when and how long you can duck out to hike was reassuring for those of us who didn’t thru in our twenties. Thank you for this beautiful book and for sharing your story with all it’s triumphs and sorrows.

Great story!
This is probably my seventh or eighth book on hiking the Appalachian Trail. Although I’ve enjoyed every book I have read, this was the one that was the most relatable to my situation. I too, am a middle-age woman and although I’ve not hiked the trail at all, I definitely have aspirations to do so! Sticks helped me to realize that the dream is still a possibility. I thoroughly enjoyed her story and chuckled out loud many times throughout with her sense of humor. I loved her southern accent, it definitely added some extra charm. She kept the story interesting with her trail observations and also interspersed with her personal life. I am so inspired!

Sticks gives me hope for my on section hike!
I enjoyed every minute of Sticks and Stones. Most AT books are written by thru-hikers, which is an unlikely dream for many of us. Reading about the success of Diane Harsha's multi-year section hike of the AT, which was not easy-but achievable with persistence, gives me the confidence I can do this too. I know the AT well through books and my own adventures, yet Diane brought new perspectives I appreciated as a middle aged, career woman, wife and mother.
It is not often that non-celebrity authors can pull off reading their own book, but Diane Harsha did a terrific job. It would have been tough for a narrator to capture Diane's spirit. The next time I take on a section of the trail I will look forward to revisiting the relevant section of the book.

Good Memoir Marred By Not So Good Performance
I like a good hiking memoir to listen to as I am a hiker and backpacker as well. it is even better if the story involves characters and places that are close to home like in this book. The writing was very descriptive yet there were times when "colorful" language was inserted that felt forced and completely unnecessary. As far as the performance, the author is not a professional. Cadence and tone were very much lacking along with some odd pronunciations. I had no issues with the southern accent as I grew up in rural Alabama and Tennessee and am quite used to that. Overall, I am not sure I would recommend this.
