Join celebrated UNC history professor Matthew Andrews to discover how sports have reflected various facets of American identity - both laudatory and troubling - throughout our nation’s history.

Whether you love sports or find the American sports obsession confounding, this course will help you answer the fascinating question of why sports have mattered so much to this country. Although today’s sporting events bear little resemblance to the bloodsports of the early colonies, the passion with which Americans play and watch sports remains alive and well.

Delve into the history of American sports to better understand the larger themes and controversies in this nation’s past in these 30 captivating lectures. As you explore stories of races won, touchdowns scored, and players rounding the bases, you’ll also learn about sports’ class and ethnic origins; racial prejudice, exclusion, and integration in sport and society; athleticism and the evolving ideas about masculinity and womanhood; the role of sport in the promotion of a vigorous national identity; and the use of sporting arenas as spaces to both legitimize and protest the political order.

By the end of the course, you will know more about the role of sports in American history, have a keen grasp on the general narrative and major figures in US sport history, and view contemporary sports in a new way. As you will see, sports are not mere games - they are significant cultural events in which Americans express and contest ideas about race, class, gender, and other important markers of identity.

This course is part of the Learn25 collection.

Dr. Andrews' book explores the history of every social issue to arise in America through the fascinating lens of sports. You do not have to be a jock, a sports fan, or even a lover of history to enjoy this book. Each 30 minute lecture has jaw-dropping information, lively accounts of events rooted in their times, brief but trenchant biographies, and historical and sociological (and psychological) insights that are thought provoking and that will influence you view of the world. Plus, the self-deprecating humor and animated lecture style of this wise teacher enriches the narration profoundly. One can see quickly into the first talk why Dr. Andrews continually wins "best teacher" awards from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. If, after completing this book, you disagree with anything I have written, I'll refund your Audible charge. :-)

this is one of the best sports books I've ever read. Andrews is brilliant, funny, and he's a fabulous storyteller. Whether one is interested in race, gender, social and cultural history, this book is an incredible exploration of how sports interconnects with those topics. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

One of the best sports "books" I've ever read

The author takes the takes the fascinating topics of sports history and American history to cherry pick only events that push his typical academic leftist propaganda. I'd love my money back for this piece of polished woke turd. The lectures push everything from the left wing viewpoint and almost never provide a counter argument. I got through about 20 lectures before the virtue signaling and literal bullshit had reached my limit. If you're a leftist you'll love it otherwise don't waste your time

A waste of time and money unless you're a raging leftist.
