How far would you go to get what you wanted? That's the question author Catherine McKenzie addresses in Spin - a delectable debut novel that takes listeners into the connected worlds of pop culture, tabloid journalism, and celebrity rehab. The story of a newbie undercover gossip reporter who follows a troubled starlet into a rehab clinic intending to dig up all the dirt she possibly can, Spin is smart, hip, utterly engaging contemporary fiction in the vein of Jennifer Weiner and Emily Giffin.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Imagine if Bridget Jones fell into a million little pieces, flew over the cuckoo's nest, and befriended Lindsay Lohan along the way, and you are beginning to grasp the literary roller coaster ride that is Catherine McKenzie's Spin." (Leah McLaren, author of The Continuity Girl)

3.5 - I really enjoyed the internal dialogue the character had with herself. It was realistic but still entertaining. I think what made this 3.5 instead of 4 for me were the relationships between the characters. That didn't seem as realistic to me. Sometimes I'm ok with that, but because the characters themselves were realistic, it was hard to reconcile that they all would have had these lasting relationships with each other. Overall though, fun and kind of touching story.

The narrator was awesome. The pacing was perfect and seemed perfect for the character.

If you could sum up Spin - A Novel in three words, what would they be?

Entertaining, funny, relatable

What was one of the most memorable moments of Spin - A Novel?

I know that girl. I had glimpses of my long ago party girl self in Katy. So I might have enjoyed the book more than most. The description of being sick in a bathroom and placing her face against the cool tile.....

Have you listened to any of Kristi Burns’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is her book for me. But it won't be the last.
I don't understand the description of a piece of music for each chapter. However, it's great music. This would make a great movie.

Who was the most memorable character of Spin - A Novel and why?

Katy of course. She has a running dialog with herself, and her inner woman has a sarcastic sense of humor. She is honest to a fault and leaves nothing to the imagination. How many of us have ever gotten ourselves in a situation that didn't turn out like we hope? And end up hurting the ones we care about in the process.

Any additional comments?

I just enjoyed this book. I couldn't put it down. Looking for another.

Spin by Catherine McKenzie was an interesting book. She balanced a very serious story line with romance and humor. Sometimes I wasn't sure about what would happen next, so it kept me on my toes. Kristie Burns always does a great job as narrator, making the characters come to life with her voice.

Would you try another book from Catherine McKenzie and/or Kristi Burns?

I was gifted this audiobook in exchange for an honest and unbiased review.

YES! I am a new fan of Kristi Burns, she has a flair for her narrative, clearly understands her characters and the script - she is without flaw:)

Would you be willing to try another book from Catherine McKenzie? Why or why not?

Catherine McKenzie has a pretty distinct writing style, she softly touches on real life painful issues while keeping you inside the characters head at all times - the inner dialogue is great and often I find myself chuckling out loud - or grinning at the self ridicule.

What about Kristi Burns’s performance did you like?

Did Spin - A Novel inspire you to do anything?

Truthfully, the story wasn't my favorite...i had a terrible time identifying with this character and spent a good deal of time wondering where the story was going....

Any additional comments?

This doesn't mean its a bad book, it just means that I was fairly "meh" over the content, I don't understand drinking beyond one or two - thus the underlying for this character held no appeal - and I felt she was struggling to maintain a youth that she wasnt even sure actually existed...

into the mind of a resistant 30 something female..

Any additional comments?

For a book about addicts and rehab this was a surprisingly fun story! The main character Katie isn't always likable and makes some truly awful decisions but because of this she feels like a real person. Maybe even someone you would want to be friends with. She's a hot mess but she's entertaining! I have to say that the portion that takes place in rehab was actually my favorite part of the book. It was laugh out loud funny while not trivializing addiction. It isn't in any way super serious or heavy. There are some emotional moments but most of it is quite lighthearted. The romance was cute and sweet and thankfully not Katie's main focus.
I enjoyed this audio version very much and the narrator captured Katie perfectly. I'm a little dubious about her Irish accent for Katie's friend Greer but overall I think she did a great job.

Who knew rehab was such fun?

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I really didn't like when she would have "conversations" with herself. It didn't really help the story along at all and felt really out of place. There were also a lot of details that didn't need to be in there, they were filler in an already long book.

Would you ever listen to anything by Catherine McKenzie again?

Possibly.

Story Dragged A bit

I finished listening to the audio book Forgotten by Catherine McKenzie (which I just reviewed and loved) and at the end of that audiobook there is a preview of the first chapter of SPIN. Well after that preview I was hooked and had to listen to that complete audio too! I was fortunate enough to already have it in my Library "given by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review via Audiobook Boom". I would have happily paid for SPIN if I didn't already have it. It is so entertaining that I couldn't put it down, not even to get sleep! You can help but love the main character Katie with all her flaws. I love the fact that she's older and still trying to find her place in life. After listening to a second book by Catherine McKenzie I really, really enjoy the way she tells a love story by not focusing entirely on the love story. She has this way of taking the reader on the life journey with the main character as they go through struggles in life and it just so happens they find love in the process. When listening to audiobooks the narrator is so important and Kristi Burns was just PERFECT!

CHAOS TO PERFECTION!
