Joni Lark has a secret. She’s one of the most coveted songwriters in LA, and yet she can’t write. There’s an emptiness inside her, and nothing seems to fill it.
When she returns to her hometown of Vienna Shores, North Carolina, she hopes that the sand, the surf, and the concerts at The Revelry, her family’s music venue, will spark inspiration. But when Joni gets there, nothing is how she left it. Her best friend is hiding something, her mother’s memories are fading fast, and The Revelry is closing.
How can Joni write when her world is leaving her behind?
Until she hears it. A melody in her head, lyric-less and half-formed, and an alluring and addictive voice to go with it—belonging, apparently, to a wry musician with an emptiness of his own.
Surely, he’s a figment of Joni’s overworked imagination.
Then a very real man shows up in Vienna Shores. He’s arrogant and guarded—nothing like the sweet, funny voice in Joni’s head—and he has a plan for breaking their inconvenient telepathic connection: finish the song haunting them both and hope they don’t risk their hearts—or their secrets—in the process.
Because that melody, the one drawing them together . . . what if it’s there for a reason?

Very personal story

Sounds like love was such a fun concept and a beautiful tale about how terrifying it is to fall in love, to leave home, to miss out, to admit your dreams have changed, and to lose a loved one… suddenly or slowly.
The long goodbye

This one truly had me on a roller coaster of emotions. The lighthearted and romantic scenes were really hitting. I particularly love the musical aspects and Joni’s musical family. Ashley always creates vibrant small towns that feel lived in.
The devastatingly raw scenes with Joni’s mom brought me to my knees! Why do you love to wrench my heart out, Ashley Poston? It’s hard to wrap my head around losing someone while they’re in front of you, so the dementia rep in this book ruined me.
On a different note (ha!), the fanfic vibes in this one are through the roof. Especially with characters going in and out of chapters and not mentioned again. It made the story fun, though. Plus, there are Clementine and Iwan cameos!
The magical aspects don’t seem to have a rhyme or reason in this book. The MCs are in each other’s heads most of the time. Unfortunately, it only made the miscommunication trope in this one so stupid and infuriating.
Also, there was singing in the audiobook, but no actual music, which I think is a huge misopportunity.
But overall, it’s a fun read. Other than dementia, the book tackles themes of dreams changing and chasing them at different stages of life. It’s something refreshing to read about. Highly recommend!
Such a great audiobook

But without the words, even the best storytelling can't weave the magic.
A Poston has created the perfect story that includes throw-back & new music, rich characters, and realistic situations about dementia.
It is a love story wrapped up in a song.
I will refer back to this story whenever I want to determine if another story contains all of the coponents necessary to create a perfect world for the reader to lose himself/herself in.
A beautiful story woven together in a poetic, lyrical way
