AN INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER! ∙ A hitmaking songwriter and a bitter musician share a startling and inexplicable connection that they’ll do anything to shake, in the next sparkling, magical book from the New York Times bestselling author of The Seven Year Slip and A Novel Love Story.

As featured in The New York TimesPeople The Washington Post USA Today ∙ NPR ∙ ELLEMarie Claire ∙ E! News ∙ Katie Couric Media ∙ Woman's World ∙ theSkimm ∙ Brit + Co ∙ Yahoo! Life ∙ She Reads ∙ and more!

Joni Lark has a secret. She’s one of the most coveted songwriters in LA, and yet she can’t write. There’s an emptiness inside her, and nothing seems to fill it.

When she returns to her hometown of Vienna Shores, North Carolina, she hopes that the sand, the surf, and the concerts at The Revelry, her family’s music venue, will spark inspiration. But when Joni gets there, nothing is how she left it. Her best friend is hiding something, her mother’s memories are fading fast, and The Revelry is closing.

How can Joni write when her world is leaving her behind?

Until she hears it. A melody in her head, lyric-less and half-formed, and an alluring and addictive voice to go with it—belonging, apparently, to a wry musician with an emptiness of his own.

Surely, he’s a figment of Joni’s overworked imagination.

Then a very real man shows up in Vienna Shores. He’s arrogant and guarded—nothing like the sweet, funny voice in Joni’s head—and he has a plan for breaking their inconvenient telepathic connection: finish the song haunting them both and hope they don’t risk their hearts—or their secrets—in the process.

Because that melody, the one drawing them together . . . what if it’s there for a reason?

I liked the magical aspect. Would have liked more of that and less of the long goodbye. I appreciate the lack of sexual detail. Good romance

Very personal story

I love that, while overall light and funny love stories, Ashley always strikes a relatable chord of the human experience (pun absolutely intended).

Sounds like love was such a fun concept and a beautiful tale about how terrifying it is to fall in love, to leave home, to miss out, to admit your dreams have changed, and to lose a loved one… suddenly or slowly.

The long goodbye

Nicely written, sweet perspective on dementia and personal growth. I loved that the author created room for change in the protagonist’s life without relying

Supersweet, well performed, well paced

Ashley Poston has done it again. The magic and romance in her books is unlike any other. I know when I read her novels I am in for an adventure and like all of her others, this one did not disappoint. The characters are so well developed, the story instantly draws you in and the fantasy aspect of it makes you wish you could experience the same kind of magic. Laughing, crying, both at the same time, expect it all with this one. Pair that with the amazing performance of the narrator and this book is by far my favorite of 2025. I can not wait for her next one!

Absolutely amazing

This is a love story with so many beautifully depicted objects of the main character’s life. A clever love story is the overall plot, but the richness of the side subjects are so relatable. It fully realizes the love of parents, the love of your best friend, the love of music, the love of hometown, the love of being in the moment, and the love of traditions all rolled into one beautiful, touching story. I feel this book so rich in audio may loose something in print. Download it today. After listening to this it gave me the same feels as the first time watching the movie “Beaches,” with my Mom. This book makes me want to call her just to talk about it all over again.

A Lovely and clever must read

Great characters and stories. Love the authors notes at the end and felt the pain and joy she did.

sadness we all go through in one way or another

This is the most touching and heart-filled romance book I’ve experienced this year. I laughed, I cried, I dreamed, I grieved. My favorite literary journey.

Heart-felt

Ashley Poston is one of those rare authors who can cram all the emotions in a single book, and I ride every single one of them. Because what do you mean I could be laughing out loud, then swoon, then despair in a single chapter?

This one truly had me on a roller coaster of emotions. The lighthearted and romantic scenes were really hitting. I particularly love the musical aspects and Joni’s musical family. Ashley always creates vibrant small towns that feel lived in.

The devastatingly raw scenes with Joni’s mom brought me to my knees! Why do you love to wrench my heart out, Ashley Poston? It’s hard to wrap my head around losing someone while they’re in front of you, so the dementia rep in this book ruined me.

On a different note (ha!), the fanfic vibes in this one are through the roof. Especially with characters going in and out of chapters and not mentioned again. It made the story fun, though. Plus, there are Clementine and Iwan cameos!

The magical aspects don’t seem to have a rhyme or reason in this book. The MCs are in each other’s heads most of the time. Unfortunately, it only made the miscommunication trope in this one so stupid and infuriating.

Also, there was singing in the audiobook, but no actual music, which I think is a huge misopportunity.

But overall, it’s a fun read. Other than dementia, the book tackles themes of dreams changing and chasing them at different stages of life. It’s something refreshing to read about. Highly recommend!

Such a great audiobook

I really loved The Seven Year Slip and I was hoping this would be just as good. I thought it was a little too sappy, though. I did enjoy the characters and the story. I wish there was no “I can’t tell him how I really feel so I’m just going to let him leave” trope, those drive me crazy.

Loved Sebastian’s character

The story is read well. Perfect inflection and pace.
But without the words, even the best storytelling can't weave the magic.
A Poston has created the perfect story that includes throw-back & new music, rich characters, and realistic situations about dementia.
It is a love story wrapped up in a song.
I will refer back to this story whenever I want to determine if another story contains all of the coponents necessary to create a perfect world for the reader to lose himself/herself in.

A beautiful story woven together in a poetic, lyrical way
