Good, but ..
The only reason this doesn't get my 5-star rating is that The Good Earth was so very much better. The scope of this book is more narrow, concentrating mostly on the life of the third son, Wang the Tiger. I have the third book in her trilogy qued in and ready to listen. The ways of the earth and the poor farmer resonated with me more than the ways of the warrior but I still highly recommend reading this book.

Less Interesting Than I’d Hoped
I’ve read other Pearl S. Buck books so gave this one a shot. There were few redeeming qualities. Some of the historical parts were good but the whole story was pretty depressing. Also the narrator mispronounced a few words used repeatedly.
