From the award-winning author of the Commune series and All Gifts Bestowed comes this mind-bending new science fiction novel.

As a high school sophomore, Aiden Kelly's biggest problems should be his failing grades, his abusive father, being a self-proclaimed loner, or getting pummeled by the football team. Instead, Aiden's number one dilemma is a guy named Tony, a senior who seems to know all sorts of things that should be impossible to know.

Oh, and he may also be a sociopath. So, you know: No. Big. Deal.

When Aiden crosses Tony's path in the vice-principal's office, they form a mysterious connection, and only Tony knows the truth about it. But as their friendship grows, the strings of destiny tying their lives together slowly begin to unravel with deadly consequences.

Now, Aiden must decide which is worse: to return to his degenerate, loner existence, or experience the friendship of a lifetime - where one of them might not survive.

With a heavy foot grounded in realism and characters that leap out of the audio, Something No One Knows is perfect for fans of The OA, Sense8, and The Butterfly Effect.

I was concerned due to the slow start and the other reviews. But wow! I’m so glad I hung in there once the story picked up it was really worth the wait. The performances were great also.

Worth the wait!

Interesting most of the time but tediously drawn out and almost boring. I ploughed thro some rather than exciting and well written stuff to get truely over the continual shifts and changes to plot and characters towards the end. Probably got more out of the ending - well relief the craziness and drawn out whatever was over

On and on I listened

I have come to love the writing style of Josh Gayou. Has a way of making character development interesting. His style is usually in a first person narrative format and when he does that he shines. This book is not Commune or Udo the Digger. This book is about people and it has an interesting scifi twist that doesn't overshadow the characters who you will empathize with. Gayou taps into all of our formative years in high school. He adds a coming of age story that at times feels so personal I wanted to tell the character it would be OK. Just as I started to empathize with Aidan and worried he would become a school shooter, in came Tony. I felt for Tony. His last letter to Karen was amazing. As I fell into the writing and the heartbreak excellently narrated by the trio of actors(actress) I was surprised how much I needed to hear more about them to make sure they made it.

It isnt a simple story. It is deep, beautiful, and deserves the credit it is due. Josh Gayou's stories are inventive and human, which is what draws me to his characters, even those as alien as Udo or as sociopathic as Jake.

I would give this book 10 stars if I could.

There are books that you should read (or listen to), and this is certainly one of them.

Powerful coming of age tale

A tremolo that grows into a bittersweet gail. This story starts slow and builds relentlessly towards an oddly disjointed conclusion that somehow works. Without explaining this sentimental story, it differs from JG's other novels. Where Commune explores resilience and the toll it takes, Udo and Gifts the cost of belief; "Something" examines the rewards of of each.

While topographically and semantically unrelated to Steven Kings 11.22.63, I felt this story held much in common with its core themes. If that story touched you, this is for you.

There are a few plot gaps, unreconciled threads and a finale that felt a little more like an epilogue than an ending. Though I could argue given the nature of the story and the characters, it made sense. I missed RC Bray's performance, but the actors were superb and I'll not be able to recall this story without hearing their voices as proper and right.

JG - this is a beautiful novel that demonstrates your ability to spin yarns that are diametrically opposed from one another, while each remaining unforgettable. Thank you.

Best yet from JG

A decent story, good narration, just seems like it feel flat by the end. The twist could/should have been a bit more dramatic and fulfilling.

Eh, it's ok...

If you’re someone who loves Gayou’s Commune series and will be disappointed if that’s not what you get - then this isn’t for you. This is a total 180 from anything else I’ve read from him.

This book feels very personal. It’s clear that the author was digging deep into some kind of personal experience, trauma or pain and put together a masterful work that made me think, feel, and reflect on so many things.

It’s actually interesting to me that it’s a sci fi story at all. Almost like that element was out there to justify the book’s existence. Like the author couldn’t see why anyone would care about it otherwise - similar to how Aiden constantly assumes that his feelings are too insignificant for anyone to care about.

The sci fi element is an intriguing twist, but isn’t the point. It’s just a vehicle to deliver the story of these characters, their experiences, traumas, and vulnerabilities.

It explores all of those things, as well as loss, grief, regret….its just fantastic. Not necessarily the fun sci fi romp that many will be hoping for, but beautiful nonetheless.

Unexpected Masterpiece

The book struggles from a slow beginning and a very poor ending. Everything in between was fantastic but it just seems that it crawled over the finish line at the very end.

My review

After reading the description I thought this would be a time travel story. I guess it is but that’s not a major thing in this story. But again, it is what the story is about. You just don’t really know that during the story. I liked the way the story unfolded revealing piece by piece. Very engaging and I am definitely not a high school student.
Lots of language but it did seem to fit the story. Not for the tender of ear.
The narration was pretty good for the story being told. That said, it was a bit slow and I am sure many will complain about it. I thought it fit just fine.
I can easily recommend this book for anyone that would enjoy a trip back through their high school years.

Excellent High School story

The review promised more interest than the story delivered, which makes me question if I want to try more titles by this author. I kept waiting for the author to flesh out introduced ideas, but those never quite resolved. The ending seemed abrupt and inconclusive, and it took so long to get there, I’m not sure I have energy left to ponder what might have been meant by the whole. This might be the 2nd book I ever return to Audible for refund.
