Resumen del Editor

The valiant fight for freedom in the air and dignity on the ground

He had to sit in a segregated rail car on the journey to army basic training in Mississippi in 1943. But two years later, the 20-year-old African American from New York was at the controls of a P-51, prowling for Luftwaffe aircraft at 5,000 feet over the Austrian countryside. By the end of World War II, he had done something that nobody could take away from him: He had become an American hero.

This is the remarkable true story of Lt. Col. Harry Stewart Jr., one of the last surviving Tuskegee Airmen of World War II. Award-winning aviation writer Philip Handleman re-creates the harrowing action and heart-pounding drama of Stewart's combat missions, including the legendary mission in which Stewart downed three enemy fighters.

Soaring to Glory also reveals the cruel injustices Stewart and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen faced during their wartime service and upon return home after the war. Stewart's heroism was not celebrated as it should have been in postwar America - but now, his boundless courage and determination will never be forgotten.

Inspirational

What a bunch of stand up guys these men were. Overcoming the challenges of combat and racism with professionalism is inspiring.

Beautifully written, but the title is misleading.

It's extremely well written but ww2 is a very small fraction of this book. Most of it is before ww2 and after. I was hoping for a more in depth look into the 332nd's ww2 story.

Wonderful story with such harsh circumstances

AWESOME!! I had heard stories of Tuskegee Airman, but this will go into my top three. I loved how the book broke down each chapter and brought forward a glimpse of life during WWII for these pilots of colour.

More than a WWII Story

An inspiring story of a Tuskegee Airman from his initial interest in flight, through training and deployment, to his life after service. it's not an exhaustive examination of the Tuskegee Airman, but an informative intro.

WWII and beyond: the battle for equality

Great personal story that captures the long battle for equality for Black Americans. WWII might be the hook that attracts many people to this narrative, but the other battle started well before then and most certainly didn’t end in 1945. And it is just as fascinating as the various defeats and victories of WWII. Arthur Morey’s narration was well done. Highly recommend.

An outstanding history of amazing people!

I heard some Tuskegee airmen speak in person around 15 years ago and have been familiar at a high-level with their stories since then. The phenomenal history presented in this book beginning in the early 1900s and continuing into the 21st century while centered around WWII make this a very rich and well written story. Fascinating and well worth the time to listen to it 🙂 Thankful I found it!!!

Disappointed these extraordinary Men...

...dont seem to have a biography worthy of their story. Although the book was interesting enough, it was also way too clinically presented. Mostly Wikipedia-like facts regurgitating anecdotes of which I was already well aware. Can anyone point me in the direction of a Tuskegee Pilot History that delves into the raw and personal story of how a few brave souls stood against many...at home and abroad?
