Resumen del Editor

When a yacht being used to smuggle drugs sinks, the six smugglers must seek refuge the only place they can - an abandoned oil rig in the middle of the sea.

But there's something strange about this oil rig. For one thing, it looks more like a scientific research facility. And for another, there are no people - only piles of clothes with no bodies in them.

It soon becomes clear that something is loose on the rig. Something deadly. It's stalking them, one by one, but it's not just a horrible death they have to fear - it's what comes after....

The basis for the cult film Proteus, Harry Adam Knight's first novel, Slimer (1983), is a wild thrill ride that mixes creature feature horror, fast-paced action, and a dose of black humor.

Old School Horror

This put me in mind of the horror I grew up with, The Thing, The Fog, The Shining, etc. It was slow at first, but when the action picked up, there were enough creepy twists to keep any classic horror fan riveted. Even the ending was both satisfying and as leading as I hoped.

The narration was excellent, clear and easy to understand at all times.

The Thing...

On an oil rig! Seriously, it's pretty much the same concept. Like... exactly. But that didn't stop me from loving every single second of 'Slimer!' If you enjoy an action/adventure/body horror then this is right up your ally. I would listen to Hannibal Hills narrate the encyclopedia so... yeah this is pretty much a winner of a book. I'd recommend it to anyone at all who enjoys horror content!

great story

I really enjoyed the time the author took introducing the characters. I had tons of fun listening to this story. The narration as well as the writing was top notch. I'll definitely be looking for more from both the author and narrator. Beware abandoned* oil rigs. I received this title for free in exchange for an unbiased review.

Old School Horror Fun

Really enjoyable old school horror listen about people (a good mix that'd make sense in a movie as well as a book from semi-innocent to psychopathic) who are rescued from the proverbial frying pan by jumping into the fire. Only in this case the frying pan is a lifeboat/dingy and the fire is an abandoned? oil platform in the freezing north sea. There they'll fight for their lives against an unusual and interesting 'antagonist' for a horror novel. It's claustrophobic and the setting is dreary but it's also frenetic and fun with it's share of kills and black humor.

The narrator was a great match for this style of story and brought it to life in a great way.

80's Horror

Pretty good story line. Authentic characters. Gripping and entertaining through out.
Left slightly open as all horrors of that time.
There is something good when you look back to TV,or Books of a past era. And this a good example of 80's horror

not a bad story

Story was interesting although writing was amateurish.
Narrator is annoying: He over inflects and uses only 2 voice variations for all of the characters.
Entertaining, but hard to listen to.

Just grabs you and won't let go.

I was amazed at how fast this story grabs you and won't let you go. Great character development and overall awesome performance. I don't won't to spoil anything but if you enjoy the Claustrophobic atmosphere of Alien by Ridley Scott and the who can you trust Element Of John Carpenter's the Thing you will enjoy this story alot. I wish there was a movie of this story it's Well put together I can't praise it enough.

80's Horror

I love 80’s horror and as listening realized I had read the book long time ago. Did enjoy the characters of Mark, Alex, Paul, Chris, Linda, Rochelle, and Shelley. It is about friend on a drug run on yacht when they get ship wrecked and try to get to land in a dingy when they come across an oil rig and meet up with Charlie a mutated shark with slimy tentacles that the scientists created. Amazing heroin may save the world as it kills people you have to listen to see who survives and if creature continues, the narration was good female voices a little funny. Excellent!

I am a huge fan of horror movies, and I could easily see this story being made into a movie. It has all the right stuff for a nice creature feature. A small group of people stranded in the middle of nowhere, stumble across a terrifying creature. The fight for survival ensues with all the necessary twists and turns leading up to a dramatic finish. The story flows very well, and is wonderfully narrated.

Quick, fun read

This was my first time listening to Hannibal Hills narrate. While I did have to speed his narration up a bit, I generally liked his work. His accents were good, his range between the men was decent. His female voices weren’t grating to the ears, but not terrifically varied, either. His voicing of the characters had me wanting to slap said character every time he appeared in my ears but considering the dude was a class A jackass it was a good choice.

The characters aren’t much to speak of. You’ve got an asshole drug-runner and his tough girlfriend, a druggie and his girlfriend that would do anything for him, and then the other guy and his girlfriend. That is pretty much all you find out about the characters and, really, all you need to know about them. They’re characters in an 80’s cheesy horror book. The rules say that only a few of them are going to survive and the rest are going to die horrifically. (I like this rule.)

There was a scene in here that made my stomach churn. Unusual for me. I can put up with a lot without even thinking about it, but stuff being forced unnaturally far down people’s throats triggers my gag very, very quickly. The rest of the scenes were weird and/or gross, but not particularly disturbing. (Sometimes they were kind of fascinating to imagine.)

In regards to the story itself: It took a while to hook me and it reminded me a little too strongly of The Thing but I was nevertheless engaged in what I was reading. This is only a 133-page (at least on Kindle) book, so by necessity the story had to be tight and the pace rapid. Stuff starts happening within about fifteen minutes and doesn’t let up until a suitably dramatic ending.

Overall, Slimer is not particularly original or horrifying, but it is as cheesy as you would expect horror from this era to be. I’m happy that Valancourt are re-releasing these gems in an era that can embrace them for their bad-goodnesss. Hannibal Hills did a solid job as narrator and I’d be willing to listen to more from him in the future.
