Seven-time Spur Award winner Elmer Kelton sets this "completely absorbing" prequel to his award-winning classics The Good Old Boys and The Smiling Country in 1889 Texas. Hewey Calloway and his kid brother Walter head for West Texas - hoping to live their cowboy dream. But when Walter's crush on a gal threatens the dream, Hewey plots to get Walter back in the saddle again.©2005 Elmer Kelton (P)2008 Recorded Books,LLC Ficción Género Ficción Westerns Sueño Vaqueros

Great writing, great narration. The story makes you want more so you can see how the brothers grew up and older

I love Elmer Kelton's writing about the area in which I grew up, and George Guidall is the perfect reader!

When I got to the end of the story. Now that I’m hooked I will have move on to next part of the story. I’m sure it’s as good this one.

Just good story.

Love listening to Elmer Kelton’s trio of Hewey Calloway books. Each book is great! Kelton is the very best western writer. It’s easy to read all Kelton books over and over. Sue McKenzie

Kelton is an incredible writer and provides a fabulous story with a backdrop of Texas history and a reminder of how America and Texas were built. I'm on my 6th book now and can't get enough. If you love Texas--or the" idea" of Texas--you will love Kelton and his characters. Give yourself a break from the news and read/listen to Kelton. Guidall is the perfect reader too.

Great Texas writer!

Another great story from EK and a great narration from GG. I would highly recommend.

storyline starts out very well and matures into a great story of men who left the farms to become cowboys the author does a good job of putting all that together The narrator does a great job I'm bringing the story to life.

Kelton always keeps me interested and this book was no exception. I like the way he develops his characters. I inevitably feel like I am riding along with his cowboys. Guidall is a great narrator and I enjoy his characters' voices.

Enjoyable story

When I listen to Mr. Kelton’s stories, it takes me back to when times were simple.

That's what this is: just plain fun. A faced-paced adventure told with a light touch that carries a constant undercurrent of humor, this story is a joy to listen to. You won't want it to end. Luckily it doesn't end. Not here, at least. This novel is the first installment of a three-book series that follows the story of Hewey Calloway over three decades. “The Good Old Boys” is the second book of the trilogy, “The Smiling Country” the third. (By the way, Audible gets this order wrong, listing the last two titles in reverse order. Don’t believe them.) Each book is better than the one before: it’s a real pleasure to watch Hewey grow over time even as he actively resists the process, determined to stay the foot-loose, irresponsible free-spirit he was in his youth. Throughout it all he remains one of the most enjoyable characters I have encountered in some time.
The narrator for all three books is the masterful George Guidall. Just the fact that he’s on board is a recommendation in itself. Treat yourself.
