Full of action!

This book seemed to have a lot more action than the previous Nicci books. The characters are fleshing out nicely. I was pleased to hear hints of the Mord-Sith ancestry, and a small morsel about Nathan's childhood as well.

It left me anxious for the final book--I'm looking forward to it already!

As for the narration, it was great. I often listen while in an extremely noisy environment, and the narration was clear and easy to understand through it all.

A bit of a drag story

Overall a decent book but a bit repetitive and monotonous. Banon is saying obvious things and Nicci seem to pull magic tricks out of nowhere despite past chapters building up to that moment. I would've preferred a different narrator.

Pretty much a cliff hanger

Everything was left hanging in this one. Absolutely no conclusions. I don’t mind a continuing story that will pick up where the last one ended but this one really just left it all out there. Just a little bit of an end would be appreciated. Nicci is lost who knows where. I’m not sure where Nathan is at the end, just out on the plain I guess and poor Banon is captured. Everything in limbo

Very enjoyable...

Really like the narrator. A nice break off story from the original series. Lots of action and suspense! A few surprises around every corner as well!

Once again Terry does not disappoint! Excellent story telling , captivates the imagination, Niki & Nathan are a great team

Goodkind does it again.

In his continuing Chronicle of the sorceress Nikki. Goodkind weaves a fantastic tale. With compelling characters and a breakneck pace. This story will hook you a lead you on a wild ride. It will stir your emotions and leave you wanting more.

Love the story, hate the narrator

I love Terry Goodkind and his stories. I am struggling with this series because of the narrator though. if book 4 is narrated by the same person, I'm not sure I'll get it.

Getting Better

OK - so the Nicci Chronicles are getting better. Stuff happened a bit too fast. I wish more time had been spent “developing.” I’m also not crazy about the narrator, but all in all I like where this is going. I’m also trapped- I have spent nearly half my life reading these frickin books!

A really good story overall

The story was solid and enjoyable. Some things are obvious to anyone who has read the Sword of Truth series, as it seems Mr. Goodkind has a couple habits with his writing of certain characters.

Nicci is always overpowered in bravado and the image she is depicted as to all who have heard of her, but she really has underwhelming fight scenes when facing other practitioners of magic. Mr. Goodkind sprinkles the words “subtractive magic” into a scene, but clearly has never thought of how to use this style of magic with his characters. I understand that his system is a “soft” system, but Nicci feels like every other sorceress he writes for, except she throws wizard’s fire.

By this I mean that every sorceress in every book he has written uses air pushes, normal fire, maybe some lightning when they’re considered strong in their gift, and maybe they’ll have some esoteric knowledge. That’s all they can do really. Nicci having the gift of a wizard, that of a sorceress, and Subtractive magic from her dealings with the Keeper of the Underworld makes her arguably the strongest practitioner of magic on within both the Old and New worlds, yet, she is written like the average sorceress when in combat.

For a person who taught wizards to be wizards, she does very little wizardly magic. That’s probably my biggest complaint about the writing of the story. Nicci seems tame compared to The Sisters of The Dark in the previous books.

Otherwise, I enjoyed the story so far. Bannon and Nathan have shown some growth as characters overall, and the support characters are engaging and keep the pace of the book going very strong. It’s a worthy read, even though I think Nicci is too toned down.

The narrator is solid. Ms. Traister gives off enough imperious flare as the voice for Nicci while pulling her voice down enough for a convincing and naive enough display of Bannon Farmer. I like her versatility. Even her Nathan is really good in my opinion.

Overall, a well written book with a solid narrative performance. I’m anticipating Book Four.
