Enter a world where icy winds carry voices of spirits, where shamans cross realms, and where ancient peoples explained life, death, and the cosmos through vivid tales.

This Siberian Mythology Collection brings together two classics by ethnographer Waldemar Bogoras—Chukchee Mythology and Tales of the Yukaghir, Lamut, and Other Siberian Tribes. Preserved in oral tradition and recorded during Bogoras’s expeditions in the Russian Far East, these myths reveal the soul of one of the most remote cultures on earth.

About the author

Waldemar Bogoras (1865–1936) was a Russian ethnographer, folklorist, and linguist whose writings remain vital records of Siberia’s Indigenous traditions. Born in the Russian Empire, he dedicated his life to documenting the lore, beliefs, and lives of the peoples of the Far North.

Here are some of the tales you'll find inside:

  • The Girl and the Evil Spirit – a chilling clash with a dark force.
  • The Shaman Who Turned Into a Fox – a tale of transformation and power.
  • Story About Cannibals – a stark account of survival and taboo.
  • Reindeer-Born – the sacred origins of the reindeer.
  • The Monster with Iron Teeth – a terrifying Yukaghir legend.
  • The Grass-Blade Girl – a haunting creation tale.
  • The Woman’s Head – an eerie story of vengeance and spirits.
  • Story of Transformed Bears – where humans and animals blur along with many more tales!

Whether you love mythology, folklore, or anthropology, this collection offers enduring wisdom and unforgettable storytelling.

Journey into the frozen landscapes of Siberia and hear the voices of shamans, spirits, and heroes that still echo across the tundra.

Even though I lived in Russia for a couple years and studied Russian culture and history, I was not familiar with these stories. I lived in Western Russia and have never been to Eastern Russia so that may be way. The stories were very Russian all the same. Overall I thought the stories were entertaining and culturally informative. I thought that the narrator did a great job too.

Very informative

So many books are just rehash a fairytales from other cultures. This book is not one of those. A gives an insight to a totally different culture that you don’t normally come across. Many of the tales are very dark and violent. It made me want to look up some of the names to learn more about the peoples of this area. I recommend the book but not for children.

Definitely not your Disney fairy tales.

I have listened to many mythology collections and I really appreciate the people who took the time to seek out these stories and record them for posterity. Once I got beyond the traditional Greek and Roman mythologies that are part of the fabric of our lives, I began to notice that in each mythology collection there is that essence of what makes the peoples of a region who they are. This particular collection stands out as being one of the more vivid I have read.

Throughout the tales I can see the hierarchies and traditions of place and importance of various types of people in their society. I can see how the harshness of the land influenced their stories, and fueled their fears. The land testing the people and making them tough and able to withstand their habitat is clearly shown. As clear and vivid as the stories my grandmother told of her life.

People may think there is not much value in these old tales, but if one has ears to hear there is a great richness of the making of a culture woven throughout. Mr. Markert does his utmost to bring them all to life for us. His efforts are much appreciated.

Vivid stories of life in an inhospitable land

I liked listening to this collection. It took me a few chapters to get into the rhythm and pacing of these stories, but as soon as the story of Shaman Who Turned into a Fox started, I was captivated. Narrator did a great job, his voices for all the characters made these stories even better.

Interesting Tales, Great Narration

I enjoyed this story collection. It's important to listen to the beginning so you can understand where and who the stores come from. I love that they're a collection of stories told by people from that area.
It's fascinating that at the end of each story we're told who shared the story and when it was told.
The collection has very many short stories that are simple and easy to understand. It's really interesting to get a glimpse into the culture and beliefs of Siberian mythology. When most people think of mythology, it's usually Greek or Roman that comes to mind first but learning about other cultures' mythology is fascinating and these are collected in such a way that they're almost "bite sized" and easy to understand.

Great collection of stories handed down
