Acerca de esta escucha

Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson cross the Atlantic at the height of World War I in pursuit of a mysterious coded telegram in this new mystery from the author of The Return of the Pharaoh.

June, 1916. With a world war raging on the continent, exhausted John H. Watson, MD, is operating on the wounded full-time when his labors are interrupted by a knock on his door, revealing Sherlock Holmes, with a black eye, a missing tooth and a cracked rib. The story he has to tell will set in motion a series of world-changing events in the most consequential case of the detective's career.

Amid rebellion in Ireland and revolution in Russia, Germany has a secret plan to win the war and Sir William Melville of the British Secret Service dispatches the two aging friends to learn what the scheme is before it can be put into effect. In pursuit of a mysterious coded telegram sent from Berlin to an unknown recipient in Mexico, Holmes and Watson must cross the Atlantic, dodge German U-boats and assassination attempts, and evade the intrigues of young J. Edgar Hoover, while enlisting the help of a beautiful, eccentric Washington socialite as they seek to foil the schemes of Holmes's nemesis, the escaped German spymaster Von Bork.

A senior version of Watson and Sherlock, but very much in character for both and with Nicholas Meyer as the author, you know it will be clever and entertaining, and it is!

Whenever one is listening to or reading a Sherlock Holmes book, it is hard not to compare it to so many from the past. It is nice to say that this one lives up to the others and was very enjoyable. Thank you!

Enjoyable

Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson are brought back together during WWI to intercept a coded telegram sent by Berlin to an unknown recipient in Mexico. Holmes and Watson travel to the US and then to Mexico to find and copy the message, which is vital to the allies. During this adventure they encounter assassins, spies, some actual historical figures and others. The narration is outstanding and he perfectly performs characters from several nations all with unique accents.

Excellent new Holmes & Watson story

It is courageous of anyone to follow Doyle and write a Holmes story. I would have rated this one a bit lower but it includes so much of what was really happening at the time it is like putting Holmes in a historical novel. A grand effort that is an enjoyable listen

Love that Holmes

What’s not to love about Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson? Mr Meyer brings the pair beautifully to life with a certain touch of poignancy and pathos. Wonderfully narrated by David Rob.

A delight for all Sherlock Holmes fans!

I get off on exhaustive historical detail. The adventure-story genre appeals to me too. Meyers captured both in this Sherlock Holmes traveling spy story set during WWI. Stay for the afterward, but listen to it only after listening to the whole novel.

Richly detailed

This is the first of Nicholas Meyer's Sherlock Holmes books I have listened to. I thought the story and the portrait of Dr. Watson were quite good. However, I thought that Sherlock Holmes was not the same character as in the original books by Conan Dayle. He does not do much sleuthing or describe amazing ways he deduced something. I did like the story mirroring many true facts of WWI. I plan on listening to some of Meyer's other Sherlock Holmes books as this was still enjoyable

Good story, Homes unconvincing
