Ming-Dao Deng has devoted much of his life to studying the Tao. He was a student of Taoist master Kwan Saihung for 13 years, and he has written several books on the ancient wisdom accrued during his decades of practice. In Scholar Warrior, Ming-Dao Deng stresses the equality of physical and mental health for aspiring Taoists. The mind is nothing without the body, he states, and vice versa. Deng goes on to show how Taoist philosophy can be applied in modern daily life, writing that the path of the Tao "is one of self-cultivation". Fred Sanders captures the warm, instructive tone of the book, adopting the voice of a great teacher who might just change a listener's life.

The world needs more Taoism books and works from this author. I'm not sure this one is my favorite from this author. That said, the dire absence of proficient Taoist writings, especially modern interpretations, makes this an essential read for those who know The Path.

Calling this book “scholar warrior” is a bit of a stretch... it’s pretty much a “how to” in living a daoist life. Good info and intro into daoism, however, this guy can’t pronounce Chinese to save his life.... I really don’t understand why you would choose a narrator that can’t speak the language of the author.

As I study more and more about the Far East. And the masters who taught there. This book makes common sense of how to approach instructors who you should learn from in a very easy to understand context. Also. Meditation practices. Are explained in easy to understand terms. I am really grateful for this book. I like how is Taoist philosophy that it is about removing self from existence. The Glass of water in the Ocean metaphor is a great to think about. Pour a glass of water in the ocean and try to get that same glass of water back into the glass. It will never happen. I love how that connects us to each other in a Universal way. Worth the time and learning about Birds Nest soup recipe. Have a great day!
