From number one New York Times best-selling author Ilona Andrew comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power and family bloodlines are the new currency of society....

In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the head of her house. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.

But behind the scenes, powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.

To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her house - and her heart.

I devoured this book. If you've never read an Ilona andrews book, dont start here, start with burn for me. If you read the first trilogy and are worried about a new protagonist, don't be. Catalina is not just a new Nevada, she is definitely her own person and therefore has her own struggles and weaknesses. My favorite thing about her is probably her intelligence. She is not the heroine you would yell at through your screen asking why the heck she is going into the obvious killers lair. But she is young, and needs to work on her self confidence, and I think that is something that we will be able to watch grow throughout this trilogy and I. Cannot. Wait!

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!

Now head of House Baylor, making the big choices, and trying show strength is doesn't have....while running into her teen crush.
Loved the story line and can not wait for more!!!

Catalina's turn

Initially when I heard the different take on voices compared to the previous story with the main character’s sister I kept getting distracted by it. But after hearing it a couple of times I don’t mind it. The voices are more representative of a younger character and represent how the character perceives the world around her. This makes the story distinctly about Catalina.

I like the different voice

I don't know if it was intentional, but I found myself laughing at intervals. The characters were real.

chuckling

I loved seeing Catalina grow into her new role, and learning more about Alejandro. Looking forward to finding out what happens next.

Good world building and interesting magic theory

Though I miss the oldest sister, Catalina steps up to the plate and hits a home run. The tension between her and Alisandro is delightful. The magic battles tension filled. Great narrator. Would definitely listen to again.

I get do fascinated by the world the authors spin that I gulp a new book down on Kindle, then enjoy it again - and even more! - when the audio book comes out.
l would recommend reading the previous book, and better yet the whole series first. The character development is worth it. The background knowledge is not necessary, but multiplies enjoyment.

great plot, characters make you want next book

I feel like i have been waiting forever for this book. i was so excited to listen to it that i woke up at three after only two hours of sleep and listened to the whole thing in one go. Lol even had to wait to listen to the final 45 minutes for my power to be turned back on at one point, do to a lawn care accident. In my opinion it was well worth the wait. it is a much tighter story then the last trilogy. Didn't feel as rushed and there weren't any dependencies that i could see. Even when it looked like there might be the story provided explanations for them. my only sorta of complaint with the story, other than the ungodly wait to get it?
The romance seemed more YA then i generally like to see. It had all the tropes of a condescending male lead who is infatuated for some reason to a woman he barely knows Along with the super repressed female lead who is overwhelmed by his shear hotness and attention, while trying to pretend she's not, so that he will take her more seriously. It even had a few jealous ex flings thrown in there. Though to be fair, the book doesn't spend any real time on it like a real YA would have. Also to be fair the book seems to be trying to show a transition period between the flightful fancies of a teen crush and the uncertainty that comes from seeing people for who they really are. Also it's kind of annoying how much Catalena wants to "fix" Alasandro. Still this is only a first book and she really is super repressed, so i have no doubt it will be interesting to see how she grows in this latest installment of my favorite series.

FINALLY

Wow. Well done, complex story, set 3 years later, when House Baylor is coming out of their 3 years of protection given to a new house. It’s sink or swim time.
Nevada was hurting herself, trying to work for two houses, so she was pressured into committing to House Rogan by her family, and Catalina was made Head of House Baylor. Augustine, who I’m now calling The Instigator because of the jobs he sends them, gets Catalina out of bed late one night to help stop a young man from jumping off a roof. Turns out, he’s the younger brother of Runa Etterson, the poison mage from Diamond Fire.
And who’s in the thick of things? Alessandro Sagredo. Who is a lot more badass than we had any clue.
And that huge crush she had on Alessandro? We’re now talking Big L. Too bad she’s still worrying about him succumbing to her magic. And he’s got a larger agenda that he’s committed to.
We also get another side of Linus Duncan as Warden for Texas - hard to imagine him as bored. What’s missing is what has happened over time between Linus and Catalina that makes her very dear to him.
Overall, the story is well done, but there’s no happy ending. And this is one of the softest, smoothest cliffhangers I’ve ever seen.
Rankin does an ok job of narration. Her voice is pitched a little high for my comfort level. And I really miss Raudman’s voicing of Grandma Frieda;)

You'll barely even miss Nevada and Rogan. This book has all the things you love about the original stories with new juicy tidbits to keep you looking forward to the next. The new narrator is just as good as the previous one so there's nothing missing on that front either. Great production.

So happy to return to House Baylor
