From number one New York Times best-selling author Ilona Andrew comes an enthralling new trilogy set in the Hidden Legacy world, where magic means power and family bloodlines are the new currency of society....
In a world where magic is the key to power and wealth, Catalina Baylor is a prime, the highest rank of magic user, and the head of her house. Catalina has always been afraid to use her unique powers, but when her friend’s mother and sister are murdered, Catalina risks her reputation and safety to unravel the mystery.
But behind the scenes, powerful forces are at work, and one of them is Alessandro Sagredo, the Italian prime who was once Catalina’s teenage crush. Dangerous and unpredictable, Alessandro’s true motives are unclear, but he’s drawn to Catalina like a moth to a flame.
To help her friend, Catalina must test the limits of her extraordinary powers, but doing so may cost her both her house - and her heart.

l would recommend reading the previous book, and better yet the whole series first. The character development is worth it. The background knowledge is not necessary, but multiplies enjoyment.
great plot, characters make you want next book

The romance seemed more YA then i generally like to see. It had all the tropes of a condescending male lead who is infatuated for some reason to a woman he barely knows Along with the super repressed female lead who is overwhelmed by his shear hotness and attention, while trying to pretend she's not, so that he will take her more seriously. It even had a few jealous ex flings thrown in there. Though to be fair, the book doesn't spend any real time on it like a real YA would have. Also to be fair the book seems to be trying to show a transition period between the flightful fancies of a teen crush and the uncertainty that comes from seeing people for who they really are. Also it's kind of annoying how much Catalena wants to "fix" Alasandro. Still this is only a first book and she really is super repressed, so i have no doubt it will be interesting to see how she grows in this latest installment of my favorite series.

Nevada was hurting herself, trying to work for two houses, so she was pressured into committing to House Rogan by her family, and Catalina was made Head of House Baylor. Augustine, who I’m now calling The Instigator because of the jobs he sends them, gets Catalina out of bed late one night to help stop a young man from jumping off a roof. Turns out, he’s the younger brother of Runa Etterson, the poison mage from Diamond Fire.
And who’s in the thick of things? Alessandro Sagredo. Who is a lot more badass than we had any clue.
And that huge crush she had on Alessandro? We’re now talking Big L. Too bad she’s still worrying about him succumbing to her magic. And he’s got a larger agenda that he’s committed to.
We also get another side of Linus Duncan as Warden for Texas - hard to imagine him as bored. What’s missing is what has happened over time between Linus and Catalina that makes her very dear to him.
Overall, the story is well done, but there’s no happy ending. And this is one of the softest, smoothest cliffhangers I’ve ever seen.
Rankin does an ok job of narration. Her voice is pitched a little high for my comfort level. And I really miss Raudman’s voicing of Grandma Frieda;)
