Tracy Lee McWhorter stood in amongst the huge old growth pine trees staring at it all in amazement as there was no way these trees should be here. His old house should be right here in this very spot next to this creek. He thought back to a week ago; he hadn’t believed what he had been told when his grandmother finally got a hold of him. He hadn’t answered her calls or even listened to her phone messages for days on end after they started to show up on his cell phone. After all, what could really be that important? It took her contacting the police and having them do a check on him to get the information about his mother to him. The doorbell rang and he answered the door to find two large uniformed officers. He at first thought he was in some kind of trouble. He was told in no uncertain terms that his mother was missing and that he was to call his grandmother. By the time he could get a flight and arrived in Lewiston, Idaho, it was another whole week. Grandma filled him in on all the goings on and the fact that his mother or her and the neighbor’s homes were nowhere to be found. ** So here I was standing on what was now my land which a few years ago I had declared to my mom, I had hated. It is missing the house and outbuildings that should be here. I looked all around at the thick forest surrounding me and thought “my father and mother both would have loved this.” I talked out loud to myself as I stood among the trees. “Now what am I supposed to do? Mom where are you, will you ever be back?” With that, I sat down on the dense forest floor and cried. Knowing that I had left home with the words echoing in my mother’s mind that I would never return here again, how much I hated this place and how I was raised. What an idiot I was. I just never figured mom would vanish or die. I thought she would always be here even if I never came home. I thought this would be my backup if the world went crazy as it seems to be doing. I never bothered to tell her that. I didn’t want to give her the satisfaction that she might have been right. I came up each day for three weeks to walk the property. With my mind finally made up of what I had decided to do, I called a logging company. After telling them where I lived, I told them I wanted them to come up and cut down twelve acres worth of trees. At first, the company man told me that twelve acres wasn’t enough and it wasn’t worth the cost of the fuel, machinery and wages. “If that’s what you think then ok, I will call another company. I’m sure they’ll want these old growth trees.” On the other end I heard. “Old growth? What do you mean old growth? There isn’t any more old growth in your area anymore. That was logged off decades ago.” “Okay; if that’s what you think. I’m not gonna beg someone to come and take a look and give me a price.” “Wait, wait let me talk to the boss.” A minute later the man was back. “We will send someone up for a look see tomorrow. Give us your exact location.”
