When Chris Bryson was discovered nude and severely beaten stumbling down Charlotte Street in Kansas City in 1988, police had no idea they were about to discover the den of one of the most sadistic American serial killers in recent history. This is the true story of Robert Berdella, nicknamed by the media the Kansas City Butcher, who from between 1984 and 1988 brutally raped, tortured, and ultimately dismembered six young male prostitutes in his unassuming home on a quiet street in Kansas City.

Based on the actual 720 page detailed confession provided by Berdella to investigators, it represents one of the most gruesome true crime stories of all time and is unique in the fact that it details each grizzly murder as told by the killer himself. From how he captured each man, to the terrifying methods he used in his torture chamber, to ultimately how he disposed of their corpses, rarely has there ever been a case where a convicted serial killer confessed to police in his own words his crimes in such disturbing detail. Horrific, shocking and rarely equaled in the realms of sadistic torture - Berdella was a sexually driven lust killer and one of the most sadistic sex criminals ever captured. Not for the faint of heart, this is the tale of Robert "Bob" Berdella, the worst serial killer in Kansas City history and for those that are fans of historical serial killers, is a true must listen.

This is a really riveting story and kept my attention, no problem BUT the narrator. Oh my gosh. Says "prostate" instead of "prostrate." Says "exscaped" instead of "escaped" about 25 times. He says "quirrel" (rhymes with sqiuirrel) instead of "quarrel."
And he speaks like an automoton, accenting really weird word choices-- "someone he went to school WITH." It's just odd and very distracting. The mispronunciations are the worst though. LIke once or twice, you can forgive but this happens so many times, I lost count. There's also a mistake where the same fraction of a sentence is repeated twice--he didn't check his recording well enough. I'll never buy another book narrated by this guy.

This is a short book that goes over who he is, a brief of his history, his line of thinking in summary, what he did to his victims in some graphic detail, and his capture.
Overall it was a good short listen (I bought the audiobook version) and brief overview with details thrown in, of Berdella.
I read a lot of serial killer books and I have heard of Berdella but not often. I’ve never really looked into him much. He’s a sick and twisted monster that’s for damn sure.
The narrator did a great job. Didn’t annoy me or bore me.

Good quick listen

As a Kansas City native, this was a very informative listen. The narrator had a few mispronunciations, but that didn’t take away from the overall experience of the book itself. A very informative and quick listen.

Very informative.
