Resumen del Editor

A nonfiction family dramedy about overcoming obstacles, family bond, and survival. A true story of a family’s struggle to endure in a challenging time and an even tougher environment. Delivered from the perspective of the youngest child of nine with humor, hardship, and professional precision.

"Deon D. Price has provided a trusted and respected perspective for youth. A great storyteller, he has mastered the ability to deliver a critical and current message to today’s youth culture." (Larry J. Moody, East Palo Alto, CA City Council member)

"A great read! This book should be a blueprint for anyone committed to serving youth and families. I’m impressed with Deon’s innovative approach and creative thinking for impacting young people." (Wil Cason, motivational speaker)

"To say that Deon D. Price and his journey in Raised in Hell is inspiring does not do it justice. He provides a well-lit path from illness to wellness inside urban America. He lifts me up and makes me and others go on doing what we do." (Mike Pritchard, keynote speaker, author, and life coach)

"Deon D. Price’s heartbreaking yet laugh-out-loud story is a model of resiliency for today’s youth and should be a must read for those giving their all to help improve the lives of young people in America." (Heidi Schrumpf, JD, PhD, University of Montana)

Eye opening & thought provoking book. A must read.

The author takes us on a wonderful, frightening and rewarding ride along into his personal journey. Discovering his true passion for learning and understanding, it helps us understand how little effort it would take our society to prevent these things from happening EVER. It’s also abundantly clear how these stories help craft the author into a man and father that helps grow and nurture children who may be being raised in similar situations to himself. The way he crafts his stories, he allows you to feel like you are right there with him experiencing some of the deepest poverty that America has to offer. The author's stories are both horrifying and uplifting at the same time. Horrifying by the sheer magnitude of the depravity that the author was exposed to, but also quite uplifting as he just barely seemed to wiggle through these situations and turn them into positive growth moments. What I find most impressive about this book is that there was very little, to no blame placed on anybody, from family members especially his mother to the institutions or society that contributed to this miscarriage of humanity. I believe that it takes a special type of individual to be able to come through these experiences. Though there are many that have and still further more that give back. There are less than a handful that have done both of those things while choosing to put pen to paper to help our society understand the mistakes that we're making. Illuminating where and how the societal safety net could be better applied so that young men and women like the author can continue to thrive and help break this cycle of poverty and growing up in hell.

This book is a definite read for anyone who has experienced poverty, as I believe it could help reframe the experience into something more positive. It can also help those that did not grow up in hell to understand the significant life hurdles or straight up barriers that are in the way of comfort, happiness, success, freedom or even life.

I would like to thank the author for sharing and helping me grow in my own thoughts on the subject of poverty, substance abuse, fatherhood, racism, child abuse, the social safety net, education and family. Read this book.
