From the breakout SFF superstar author of Murderbot comes the remarkable sequel to the USA Today and Sunday Times bestselling novel, Witch King. A fantasy of epic scope, Queen Demon is a story of power and friendship, of trust and betrayal, and of the families we choose.

Dahin, a beloved member of the Witch King's coterie, believes he has clues to the location of the Hierarchs' Well, and the Witch King Kai, along with his companions Ziede and Tahren, knowing there's something he isn't telling them, travel with him to the rebuilt university of Ancartre, which may be dangerously close to finding the Well itself.

Can Kai stop the rise of a new Hierarch?

And can he trust his companions to do what’s right?

Follow Kai to the end of the world in this thrilling sequel to the USA Today-bestselling Witch King.

"Narrator Eric Mok ensures that each character, past and present, is instantly recognizable. Listeners are rewarded with a sweeping, immersive story full of fascinating details and studded with small, intimate, moving moments between characters we come to care deeply about." — AudioFile

Loved this second installment. Wells is definitely one of my new favorite authors. The way she weaves the past and present together, juxtaposing young Kai’s sweet and oblivious nature against the current powerful, often blood-thirsty present keeps you wondering how Kai became what he is. Wells manages to surprise readers and sprinkles hints about what’s to come but also forces readers to read between the lines. Kept me on the edge of my seat! Took one star off performance because the Voice actor read very slowly (compared to the first book) and so I ended up listening at 1.05 speed which was a first for me. 10/10

Amazing! Need part 3 now!

Martha Wells character development and storytelling is second to none. Great story and pacing. The timeline jumps are amazing, as you get to learn about the past while experiencing the uncertainty of the present story. Can’t wait for the next one!

Another amazing story

Erik Mok was incredible in the first book. The second book seemed like it was recorded at a slower speed. I changed the speed to 1.15x and it was much more like the first book. Taran's voice was different though, slower and deeper, and I didn't care for that.

The story is fantastic. I love the world building, the found family trope, the characters (always complex, never straightforward or stereotypical). Martha Wells is a wonderful.

complex world building, found family

Gripping story and some surprising twists. Really liked how the effects of trauma play out in the different characters across the two time periods. Can't wait for the conclusion!

Excellent follow up!

The sequel is even better than the first, although, alas I expect another yet to come which will be hard to wait for! So gratifying to read great world building and great writing in the era of many that are neither.

Wonderful, exciting, complex

The world building was novel and rich. Martha Wells is excellent as always. I hope there’s a third on the way! I’m not ready to leave this story.

Great story with excellent narration

i'd forgotten a lot of the previous book so it took a lot to catch up to the story and with the two timelines that just compounded my confusion.
I found the story ok although the end felt abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying. the characters were fine but beyond the core cast a bit vague and cardboard like.
I really love her murderbot books so want to love these other works but I feel the lack of the humorous elements is what diminishes these other stories.
Definitely feels like a middle of a trilogy book.

it's fine

I really wanted to like Martha Wells’ Queen Demon, but 5 hours in I still have no idea what’s going on, who is who, or when which chapters are taking place. Gonna DNF. I liked Witch King, but this is a mess. There are a LOT of characters, most of whom seem unnecessary and get no development or internally. Characters also have very similar names (Tanis and Thenis, Beshet and Beshasa) making it extra hard to keep them straight!

Too many poorly developed characters
