Following her record-breaking debut trilogy, Ann Leckie, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, Arthur C. Clarke and Locus Awards, returns with a thrilling new story of power, theft, privilege and birthright.

A power-driven young woman has just one chance to secure the status she craves and regain priceless lost artefacts prized by her people. She must free their thief from a prison planet from which no one has ever returned.

Ingray and her charge will return to their home world to find their planet in political turmoil, at the heart of an escalating interstellar conflict. Together, they must make a new plan to salvage Ingray's future, her family, and her world, before they are lost to her for good.

The Imperial Radch trilogy begins with Ancillary Justice, continues in Ancillary Sword and concludes with Ancillary Mercy.

Also available now: Provenance is a stunning standalone adventure set in the same world as Ancillary Justice.

lacks some exposition, needs close attention.

SciFi setting but reads like a period drama, lots of various important people and titles to remember, not a bad story but not for everybody and definitely requires close attention or a cheat sheet.

Zero issues with suspension of disbelief

Admittedly complicated, but engaging and easy on the ears so I have happily listened several times.

It has a somewhat different feel and different focus than the Ancillary series, so you should not simply be excepting more of the same, though there are some common themes of exclusion and redemption, a very fine and subtle exploration of family and class, and more fun conceptions of gender. We also meet some very odd aliens! If Ancillary was a tale of revolution and adventure, this is a tale of how our childhoods and the families that raise us continue to define us all our lives (without being a coming-of-age story in the slightest).

The narration is in my opinion, excellent. It's well paced and perfectly consistent, generally very professionally done. The characters are read in distinctive voices are parhaps a bit stereotypical in style, but it helps to create an immersive atmosphere and to keep track of the dialogue and the characters.

I have had zero issues with suspension of disbelief throughout, which in my experience indicates a very high quality of writing.
