Artificial intelligence does the seemingly impossible - driving cars, trading stocks, and teaching children. But facing the sea change that AI will bring can be paralyzing. How should companies set strategies, governments design policies, and people plan their lives for a world so different from what we know? In Prediction Machines, three eminent economists recast the rise of AI as a drop in the cost of prediction. With this single, masterful stroke, they lift the curtain on the AI-is-magic hype and show how basic tools from economics provide clarity about the AI revolution and a basis for action by CEOs, managers, policy makers, investors, and entrepreneurs.

Companies are collecting more data from ever. With the ease of collecting all that data, all the different sources where you can receive the data, and the inexpensive storage, it makes sense to collect as much data as possible. But without a good analysis of that data, and without some time to really figure out what trends and insights are inside all of it, that data becomes worthless. This is where predictive analytics is going to come in handy.

Everyone would benefit from seeing further into the future, whether buying stocks, crafting policy, launching a new product, or simply planning the week's meals. Unfortunately, people tend to be terrible forecasters. As Wharton professor Philip Tetlock showed in a landmark 2005 study, even experts' predictions are only slightly better than chance. However, an important and underreported conclusion of that study was that some experts do have real foresight.

Today we think statistics are the enemy, numbers used to mislead and confuse us. That’s a mistake, Tim Harford says in The Data Detective. We shouldn’t be suspicious of statistics - we need to understand what they mean and how they can improve our lives: they are, at heart, human behavior seen through the prism of numbers and are often “the only way of grasping much of what is going on around us”.

The most powerful weapon in business today is the alliance between the mathematical smarts of machines and the imaginative human intellect of great leaders. Together they make the mathematical corporation, the business model of the future. While smart machines are weapon number one for organizations, leaders are still the drivers of breakthroughs. Only they can ask crucial questions to capitalize on business opportunities newly discovered in oceans of data. This dynamic combination will make possible the fulfillment of missions that once seemed out of reach, even impossible to attain.

Why is Red Bull so popular, though everyone—everyone!—hates the taste? Humans are, in a word, irrational, basing decisions as much on subtle external signals (that little blue can) as on objective qualities (flavor, price, quality). The surrounding world, meanwhile, is irreducibly complex and random. This means future success can’t be projected on any accounting spreadsheet. To strike gold, you must master the dark art and curious science of conjuring irresistible ideas: alchemy.

Statistics are everywhere, as integral to science as they are to business, and in the popular media hundreds of times a day. In this age of big data, a basic grasp of statistical literacy is more important than ever if we want to separate the fact from the fiction, the ostentatious embellishments from the raw evidence - and even more so if we hope to participate in the future, rather than being simple bystanders.

In Standard Deviations, economics professor Gary Smith walks us through the various tricks and traps that people use to back up their own crackpot theories. Sometimes, the unscrupulous deliberately try to mislead us. Other times, the well-intentioned are blissfully unaware of the mischief they are committing.

For more than 20 years since his New York Times best seller Don't Know Much About History first appeared, Davis has shown that Americans don't hate history, just the dull version dished out in school. Now Davis turns his attention to what is arguably the most important and most fascinating subject in American history: our presidents. From the heated debates over executive powers through the curious election of George Washington in 1789 and, for more than 200 years, up through the meteoric rise of Barack Obama, the presidency has been at the heart of American history.

Interesting, but...
The book is interesting but goes too much into Watson, the IBM computer's performance in Jeopardy, and repeats themes mentioned earlier in the book without anything significant. The reader's performance, though making an effort to be amusing and showing talent, can be annoying!

A Great Intro to Machine Learning
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
I would recommend this audiobook to anyone who is interested in becoming a data scientist, analyst, or for anyone who wants to know more about machine learning, predictive analytics, and the basis for artificial intelligence (AI)
What was one of the most memorable moments of Predictive Analytics?
Every section was very clear.
Would you listen to another book narrated by Nicolas D. Frantela?
The narration was a bit too over the top for me.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
No. Like most non-fiction it is good to get in bite size chunks, and to repeat as needed.
Any additional comments?
This is the best introduction that I have found to get a good conceptual understanding of machine learning and predictive analytics.

Tried to stay with this
Is there anything you would change about this book?
At times, the topics were interesting. But, I could not get past the narration - pretty bad!
Has Predictive Analytics turned you off from other books in this genre?
It did not.just the author and narrator.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Nicolas D. Frantela?
Not a chance.
Do you think Predictive Analytics needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
No.
Any additional comments?
Do not recommend this book at all.

Enjoyable if at least as entertaining stories
For the most part I enjoyed the stories about different case studies of predictive analytics, which included some of the pitfalls. The narrator was peppy and dramatic which made the stories more riveting. As a budding data scientist, there was enough detail on modeling that gave me more info to research. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars was because I was really in the mood for something a little deeper on the topic, more than just how predictive analytics was applied to certain situations. But this book is still worth a listen to get inspired!
