Excellent lessons, but I need more time to respond

These lessons are excellent. My only complaint is that I wish there was more time for you to think and speak when prompted. When I have to remember something that was in an earlier lesson or figure out how to say something new with what I've learned, I really wish I had more time to think.

I usually listen to this at a slower speed so that I can have more time to think. Sometimes I have to pause it because I know that I know the answer, but I need more time to think about it before speaking. I get really frustrated when I know that I can answer on my own, but I'm interrupted by the Japanese speaker. I need a second to think before answering. It's very frustrating to be cut off by the correct response when you're half way through saying the same thing.


Other than that issue, I absolutely love this program, and I really feel like I'm learning Japanese in a way that will help me actually speak it, rather than just passing a class.

Pimsleur is great.

The challenge definitely takes a jump up in this one from the last one. I had to do a couple of chapters two days in a row before I felt that I got it well enough to move on, but honestly, I don't see it as a bad thing. I'm also a bit of a perfectionist. I strongly urge the use of these books in tandem with Duolingo because where the books are great on their own, it's really helpful to see the spelling of the words as well.

Fun and challenging

One of the most beneficial component of these lessons is that it teaches you simple yet practical conversations that will most likely be used when speaking with someone from Japan.

It was also beneficial for me with the limited amount of time I have. I could easily play it in the car and listen to the lessons on my way to work.

I feel that this was a good foundation for further development.

They ruin it towards the end

I began using Lessons 1-5 and highly enjoyed them, and I also enjoyed this at first. Around lesson 9 or 10, though a strange voice (neither the English dialogue nor the normal Japanese example voices) begins repeating new Japanese phrases after each question, with no explanation about what the phrase meant. I thought it was an audio recording error. It was very distracting.

But I started the next book (Lessons 11-15), and it continued. It wasn't until halfway through lesson 11 that they said, "you might have noticed these Japanese phrases" and then explained what they were saying: they were giving instructions to listen and repeat in Japanese now, as well as English.

A) Why would you insert random, unexplained Japanese into Japanese lessons and then not explain what they mean for several lessons? How is that a good idea?

B) It ruined the flow of the book. Previously, the format was [ENGLISH DIRECTIONS] [PAUSE FOR YOU TO THINK] [JAPANESE RESPONSE}. If anything, the pause was already too short. All of a sudden, it became [ENGLISH DIRECTIONS] [JAPANESE DIRECTIONS] [JAPANESE RESPONSE]. Instead of thinking of my response, I had to spend time figuring out the Japanese directions. By then, it's too late and I've missed the actual response.

I have no idea why you would mess up a system that was working fine. I hate this.
