Resumen del Editor

Pilgrim Theology is a map for Christians seeking to better understand the core beliefs of their faith.

Even though it's the study of God, theology has a reputation for being dry, abstract, and irrelevant for daily living. But theology is a matter of life and death. It affects the way you think, the decisions you make, the way you relate to God and the world.

Reformed theologian and professor Michael Horton wrote Pilgrim Theology as a more accessible companion to his award-winning systematic theology The Christian Faith: Widely praised for its thorough treatment of the biblical and historical foundations of Christian doctrine.

In Pilgrim Theology, his focus is in putting the study of theology into the daily drama of discipleship. Each section will orient you toward a clear understanding about:

  • Who God is
  • What our relationship is to him
  • And what our faith in Jesus Christ means in our daily walk as well as in the context of the narrative of Scripture and the community of the church

Through accessible sections on individual doctrines, as well as frequent "key distinction" boxes that succinctly explain the differences between important themes, you'll gain an understanding of doctrines that may have sounded like technical seminary terms to you before: justification, sanctification, glorification, union with Christ, and others.

You have a working theology already - an existing understanding of God. It's the goal of Pilgrim Theology to help you examine that understanding more closely and have it challenged and strengthened.

Great Book...Poor Reading Performance

Horton’s book is excellent.

Regarding the audible recording: Too many mispronunciations of theological terms by narrator Vicas Adam which gets annoying.

Great content, but don't blink

What did you love best about Pilgrim Theology?

Michael has a great way of explaining deep topics without overwhelming the reader/listener, as long as you don't mind (painlessly) expanding your vocabulary in the process.
The pace demands the listener pay closer attention than some would prefer (but that is more of a criticism of the potential listener than this author). Fortunately he keeps things quite interesting.
I started listening on the release date and kept it on continuously to the end, pausing only to sleep. Can I give this book SIX stars???

What other book might you compare Pilgrim Theology to and why?

Most anything by R C Sproul - written for those of us who haven't graduated from Seminary but secretly wish we had.

Have you listened to any of Vicas Adam’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have no previous experience with this narrator. He did an above-average job with this book, but credit should be given to the author for writting in a style that is more conversational than most Theological texts.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I appreciate Michael's treatment of the Gospel itself, which I gather is something few church-goers could accurately define, much less communicate clearly.

Any additional comments?

Many thanks to Audible for providing this book and others like it, especially when so many "contrary theological opinions" pepper the shelves here...

Horton explains "both ends" of theology.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, it is easy understandable theology but not "dummy" theology. Each doctrine he explains objectively various sides such as evangelical, roman catholic etc. and then paves the way for his pilgrim theology with biblical, historical and logical arguments.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Pilgrim Theology?

Tough to decide, many gold nuggets. One of them: p. 15 "Today, especially in the West, most people tend to associate religion with the inner realm of individual soul (mysticism) or with principles for individual or social behaviour (morality), or perhaps - though less often these days - with intellectual curiosity and speculation (philosophy). Mix elements of these three - mysticism, morality, and philosophy - together and stir in a generous dose of Yankee pragmatism, and the result is an eclectic soup that is easy to swallow. The goal of life is often viewed as some form of personal or collective happiness. If a person can mix in a bit of wisdom from various other perspectives to spice things up, all the better! The faith that springs form the Bible's story of God is entirely different ...

Any additional comments?

I got both the audible and print copy. The content is so rich and has many gold nuggets that I decided to buy a paper copy of it.

A great systematic for any Pilgrim on the way

Written from a distinctively Reformed view, Horton’s systematic theology is a great place for anyone to start their theological journey. The narrator does a good job in making a potentially dry book seem exciting, but he does occasionally mispronounce a a few words. Highly recommend

Great read, average reader

Terrific overview of Reformed theology. Concise, clear, and biblical. Reader is not great, however. Too slow of a pace, and gets weird when reading a quotation.

Thoroughly enjoyed the content and presentation.

Michael Horton has produced a thoughtful and well written overview of Christian theology emphasizing the reformed position. I appreciate how he informs and deals squarely with alternative positions and viewpoints.

Vicas Adam has done a superb job with his presentation of the material. I would be happy to find more work presented by Mr. Adam.

The Narrator, whispers you to sleep with Theology

Would you listen to Pilgrim Theology again? Why?

Yes, but I would rather read it. 1. I think a hard copy book would help bookmark and get the most out of a book like this. 2. The narrator is simply just reading you the book, very monotone and as if at times he is whispering to you. His voice just puts me to sleep.

What other book might you compare Pilgrim Theology to and why?

N/A

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The narrator is simply just reading you the book, very monotone and as if at times he is whispering to you. His voice just puts me to sleep

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Mind blown!

Any additional comments?

With any books that cover Theology a hard copy of the book is best to have at hand.
