Resumen del Editor

Internationally acclaimed aviation insider and novelist John J. Nance moves with polished ease and compelling authenticity from the cockpit to the boardroom in a world where the big three U.S. airlines have achieved national dominance, with high prices and poor service. Challenging them comes a new, visionary airline, one that combines a great name from aviation's recent past with new standards of comfort and elegance. This billion-dollar start-up was engineered by Elizabeth Sterling, a bright young investment banker (and single parent). When she assumes the post of chief financial officer for this upstart carrier, she finds herself masterminding a frantic defense against a sinister campaign by powerful, unknown forces determined to destroy her proud creation.

Phoenix Rising is a story in the grand tradition of Airport and Hotel, a blend of strong characters, chilling suspense, and realistic detail.

Reseñas de la Crítica

"Fasten your seat belt and prepare for a bumpy ride....Nonstop action circles the globe, and Brian Emerson achieves seamless transitions between American, Scottish, Canadian, and Chinese accents. The action is so intense and the voices are so natural the listener is propelled through the story." (AudioFile)
"Phoenix Rising reads like a cross between a black box transcript and Business Week. The dual dangers to a new airline involve financial skullduggery and terrorism....An absorbing book." (Booklist)

Good story, diminished by the narration

Good story, even 25 years later. Reading was difficult at first, with poor inflections and mispronounced words. but I got used to it and continued listening.

Pretty good story, reader not so hot

When I used to get John J Nance's airline thrillers on tape, they were all read by the author. Often this is a BAD idea, but Capt. Nance has a wonderful voice and does a great job. Unfortunately, Brian Emerson, the narrator of this version, is sadly laughable as he tries to handle voices with Scottish, Dutch, Southern American, English, Australian, German and other accents. The book is very pedantic and technical, which is fine when Nance explains the workings of a jet airliner, but in this story of the inner secrets of high finance and corrupt international banking, well, he lost me. The characters are good, true Nance people, very familiar, but when they ain't flying, they are yammering on about interest rate deadlines and floating hundreds of millions of dollars, it's easy to tune out.

Narrator sounds like Walter Winchell

I think I liked this a lot, but it hard to be sure because the narrator did SUCH an annoying job. If I had read the book I could give a more accurate review. I searched Audible for other titles narrated by Brian Emerson, and his last 2 were economic textbooks. The last title was released in 2019, 2 years ago. I hope this means he is doing well in a new career.

Good one

What a ride. I enjoyed this one and would have given it's better rating had it not been for the annoying narrator voice.

Excellent

If your an aviation enthusiast or a good book enthusiast ... Then this book is for you! High drama, corporate schemes, global finance ... All under the auspices of an aviation icon - what could be better! Highly recommend! You won't be disappointed!

Glad it was free

Horrible reading. Not quite monotone, but barely better. No sense of phrasing or rhythm in his reading. I cannot even determine if Nance's writing is any good, all for the wretched reading.

The story was engaging enough, as far as I could bear it. I couldn't finish it.
