Iron Within, Iron Without!

To preface my review, I am new to Warhammer, and this was my first book in the franchise. So, going into it, I was extremely excited to let learn about the Primarch of the Iron Warriors, Perturabo (my favorite chaos Primarch).

This book does not disappoint. I originally wanted to listen to this because I heard Perturabo was unlikable, and while this is somewhat true, I weirdly like him because of that. While he is a petulant and spiteful man-child, this makes him more interesting (and a bit funny) because while he strives to be a force of pure logic, he's just a basement dweller whose Dad doesn't understand him. Some might think this would be annoying to listen to, but I found it to be a good choice. Perturabo's arrogance and superiority complex mixed with his background of being used by his father(s) makes perfect sense to be translated into brooding. Unlike other Primarchs, this flaw makes him more like a real person rather than just a soldier (looking at you, Dorn).

I also really liked the flash forward bits with Barabas Dantioch and the Hrud. Something about seeing super human soldiers struggling against their own mortality is quite fascinating, and I think the author did well in describing the action.

All in all, I'd give this book a 9/10. Looking forward to reading more Warhammer!

some are tragedies

Some stories have happy endings, and in an odd way this one does as well, although it over all feels like a tragedy that even the Greeks would be proud of.

the narrator brought the iron feeling to the story. games workshop once again makes for awesome fiction even through a realistic view.

Angel Exterminatus's Perturabo was better

In voice and in character, although when consrasted with Fulgrim, almost anyone would be morally superior.

Even Iron Breaks.

I feel sad in both that I have finished this story and for Perturabo. A magnificent person in the beginning turned to such horror and torment through his inability to accept praise and love which is ultimately what he wants and needs. I both understand how he fell but also don't. I feel this Perturabo isn't even the same as the one that joined Chaos.

Love it

Really makes you understand what Peter turbo felt and where his mindset was before joining the heresy. Definitely one of the best primarch novels

Incredible VA work

Great backstory, even better narration. I would say it's in the top five for the primarch series.

A glimpse into Peturabo’s youth

As with the other primarch books we get a look to the youth of a primarch with a later tale of the primarch during the crusade that is interwoven between the story of his youth.
His arrogance and stubbornness lead to an impactful if not expected outcome.

This book helps paint Peturabos actions in the heresy which I felt was somewhat missing.
It’s kind of annoying that it takes a separate book to open up the eyes of the reader to the true underlying thoughts and issues that guide his decisions but as a book on its own it’s well written. Voice acting is great and the story is very much self contained with no heresy spoilers.
I’d give the overall a 4.5 but that’s not an option.

Wow

Ok so full disclosure Pertuabo is one of my favorites. All of my favorite primarchs are the traitor primarchs. This includes, Alpharius Omegon, Kurze, Lorgar, Angron, Mortarion and Pertuabo. Unlike the loyalists their lives weren’t good before the emperor showed up and the emperor didn’t do much to make it better. Same goes Pertuabo. Able to see the eye of terror and robbed of the enjoyment of discovery. Growing up in a world of political unrest and betrayal. Wanting to prove himself and earn praise he works the most unforgiving and brutal jobs. Breaking sieges, digging trenches and fighting the most vile and dangerous Xenos. And here we see him and his legion deal with these creatures and humans worst aspects. Must read
