A once lost magnificent antique vase from China's 13th Century Song Dynasty reappears from the depths of the Mediterranean Sea where it comes to dwell on a piano in a doctor's home. It becomes the impetus in steering the lives of this doctor and his descendants through their heartbreaks, romances, and ultimately successes.

An assassination, a sabotage on a Greek island, and amazing musical performances are but some of the events that strike their lives. Spanning from 13th Century China to the present, the story takes place on four continents, with talented individuals of different nationalities and backgrounds, always interrelated by music.

This is a richly detailed story, full of interesting characters and imaginative adventures. The historical aspect alone makes this a worthwhile read, but it is also full of love, romance, and the beauty of music in the midst of the chaotic world around us.

As a history lover and a music lover, I found this a very rewarding read. At times, I felt as though I were there sharing in the experiences of the characters.

I listened to the audio version, which is narrated by the author. She did a really good job with the narration, but I think I might have enjoyed the story a bit more, had I been reading it rather than listening.

Definitely a recommended read, especially if you like historical novels.

Richly detailed historical novel.

I loved the way Denise has all of the character voices and adds music in between the chapters, for that little bit of something extra

Love This Story Line

A magical vase from the 13th century Song Dynasty is the catalyst for musical prowess through generations of a family. The vase "sings" with each new owner. This book was a very ambitious undertaking that spanned centuries of history, cultures and locations. I consider myself fortunate that I was able to reap the benefits of the author's efforts. I enjoyed the interconnected tales of love, romance, history and destiny. The rich historical and cultural details, along with music as the central theme, are both something that I've come to expect from the author and I was richly rewarded with this endeavor. Music truly is the universal language.

Normally, I cringe and think "Noooo!" when I see that an audiobook is being narrated by the author. Ms. Kahn is a rare exception. Not only is her writing beautiful but I have found her to be a very capable narrator as well. Peace of Music was a great listening experience and I would recommend it.

I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. This review is my honest opinion.

Wonderful Listen!

Wow the author has a great understanding of music and history. The author must has spent many a day researching history and letting the mind free The musical vase , which the owner formed in China is fantastic. The owner kept on hearing music. Years later. The vase kept on traveling around the world and who ever owes the vase was blessed with the music it brought out

First time I listened to this author who narrated the story and it wS good

What a great musical listen

This is an unusual book and not the type that I would normally enjoy. However, the story is well written and the narration by the author is great!

The book begins in 13th century China when a blind potter makes a beautiful vase as a dowry for his daughter. While making the vase, he is lead by the music of Kwan Yin. The book follows the vase through its travels around the globe. This vase seems to bring out the musical abilities of its owners, including a concert pianist, an opera singer and various other characters.

The book touches on points of history, including WWI and WWII. The resilience of Greece and the Greek resistance are prominent in the book.

The main line of the story is Music and the narration is beautifully accompanied by Music especially selected for the book. This added a lot to the reading of the book.

The author/narrator did an excellent job with the various accents of the characters, which enhanced the book a lot.

Music throught the ages

This was a good book but not to my personal taste.
It is the story a a somewhat magical vase that brings good fortune to whoever owns it throughout the ages.

I believe the author read it OK but it was a little monotone.

This was a promotional copy and this is my personal review

Good book but not my cup of tea

I received a copy of Peace of Music from the author via AudioBoom in return for an honest review. Ms. Kahn's book/audiobook is the product of enormous dedication and hard work. She narrates the audiobook herself, and for the most part, does an adequate job, although I did find the male voices irritating, especially in the beginning. What was particularly jarring were the musical breaks between chapters. Had those not bothered me so much, I might have given the performance 4 stars. The story is ambitious, but I found it a bit too grand and overreaching, leading to perfunctory oversimplifications that came across as ludicrous. Two examples: a mother/musician hears her daughter sing for THE FIRST TIME when the girl is eleven and discovers (?!) that she is phenomenally gifted, musically. In another scene, a soldier returns home to France IMMEDIATELY following the 1918 armistice, and his mother is described as plump and able to cook up the best French meal ever in just a few minutes. I venture to guess there were very few plump French housewives immediately following the first world war, and there were few foods at hand to prepare an impromptu feast. Ever female character is the most beautiful and talented of her generation, and every male the handsomest and most clever. The family sings and plays the piano through most of the 20th century, guarded over by a hand-crafted Chinese vase from I can't remember which century. The author dips into cultural references from China, Greece, France, and even Russia, but they are all fairly superficial and stereotypical. Ms. Kahn's respect and reverence for these different cultures shines through, though, as does her evidently firm belief in the transcendent power of music, so a more patient reader/listener than I would probably enjoy Peace of Music.

Sweeping tale of many generations linked by music.
