Resumen del Editor

Tyler Fairfax can't seem to catch a break.

A human living in the toon district of Animætropolis, the only affordable neighborhood in San Jose, he's been surviving on the kindness of strangers, his badger neighbors, and his boyfriend while he looks for a job. An unexpected encounter with a toon from the black-and-white days gets him exactly what he needs and then some.

But Tyler's problems aren't over yet; a stranger informs him people have been going missing around this toon and his live-in talent agent, and to keep an eye out for anything suspicious. Tyler’s curiosity gets the better of him; he learns what happened to at least one of those people... and now it's happened to him.

He is turned into Fairfax Fawkes, a toon fox with a human mind and perception; everything a toon would be able to shrug off, he feels as if he were still human. Worse still, indulging his toon instincts erases a human trait or, potentially, a memory.

As he traces a web of lies, drugs, human trafficking, and murder for hire, he has to work around his foil’s compulsion to impede his progress. Trapped between human sensibilities and toon guidelines, Fairfax has to break a lot of rules if he has any hope of surviving this.

It’s get wacky or get whacked.

Strange But Fun

I received this title for free in exchange for an honest review.

Something Inthought was fabulous about the beginning of this audiobook is A.J. Mayall’s opening in which he addressed having contacted the writer of Who Framed Roger Rabbit for permission to delve into a similar world. It was a wise, classy move that garnered him an endorsement from said writer.

This story definitely works in a different world than RR. In this one, toons cannot hurt humans. There is a code they adhere to that prevents it. There is also an incorporation of toon contracts, toon religion (very hush-hush), and other unique elements.

The main plot point is that a human is forcibly turned into a toon in a horrific and secret process. From there it becomes a mission to return to humanity and seek revenge. Overall the story is rather dark. It explores societal ethics, the plight of the misunderstood individual, and the struggle to maintain one’s humanity while knowingly losing bits of it.

Nicholas Patrella’s narration is fantastic! He utilized numerous distinct character voices and does an outstanding job of the first person narrative. His performance brought the story to life. As this is only the first title of his I have heard I am not ready to make comparisons to some of the industry greats I love listening to, but I a fan. I will definitely be searching out more of his work.

If you like Roger Rabbit this is for you

A very adult take on the Roger Rabbit toon/human world (with RR’s creator’s blessing), is a fun and thought provoking adventure in a similar world.
Although it says book 1, and there definitely feels like there’s more story to tell, there is no cliffhanger and the story still works as a stand alone story. I hope another book in the series does come out because this is a fun, fascinating world I want to spend more time in.
The narrator does a great job of bringing to life all the quirky toons and regular people that populate the story.
Highly recommended.

Fascinating & Entertaining!

Paint the Toon Red, the first book in the Animætropoli series, is a cleverly composed urban fantasy. The premise is unique and fascinating; it reminded me of Roger Rabbit and Cool World. The storyline is well-written, entertaining, and grittier than I expected, containing violence, suspense, and dark elements. This was my first A.J. Mayall book, and have to say he is an exceptional storyteller with an incredible imagination. He has done a brilliant job with the world-building and character development.

Nicholas Petrella did an outstanding job with the narration; he was well-paced and precise. His inflections entirely suited the situations and characters — especially given the characters in this story. Paint the Toon Red was highly enjoyable, one I recommend.
I was given a free copy of this audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Very entertaining

“This book was given to me for free at my request and I provided this voluntary review.”

I really enjoyed this story and look forward to listening to the next. It ends with HFN and I want to see the results of their new endeavors.

It’s very Roger Rabbity, I liked that movie so knew I would enjoy this! The narrator did a wonderful job with all the voices and really acted out the story and not just read it.

Totally worth the credit if you like this kind of story with animated characters. NOT for kids, but no over the top sex scenes either.

Unexpected story twists make it a fun ride!

Whenever you start to get a feeling about how to story will proceed, it will just go bonkers in the unexpected way, so the author does an excellent job with bringing this unique story to life and narrator Nicholas Patrella does a great job with giving voices to all those different toon characters.
There is one thing that should be mentioned - Tyler is a guy and he has a boyfriend, so if reading about such things is a complete turn off then this book should be avoided, however, I am glad I did not pay attention to it because it was a fun ride regardless of the main character's escapades.

Paint the Toon Red Animætropolis, Book 1

Tyler is a regular human who has been having some bad luck since coming out to his family. One day he saves an older toon who hires him. One day he hears a scream and goes to investigate and watches and records what the human woman who lives on the estate is doing -- she's turning humans into toons!! He is caught and is turned also. But he doesn't lose his humanity since he's rescued. Now he has to figure how to adjust to being a toon and explain to his boyfriend what has happened to him.

Nicholas Patrella is an excellent narrator whose voice brings the characters to life.

An interesting and fascinating story that will keep you enthralled!

A creative and exciting story for cartoon lovers

I was given this audiobook for free in exchange for an honest review. I loved this story. If you are a fan of "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?," you'll love this book. Tyler is a young man who discovers a crime while working as an assistant for a toon, and he's determined to do everything he can to bring the criminals to justice. Keep in mind that even though this book involves cartoon characters, the book is for mature audiences only. In particular, the violence in this book can get pretty gory, and there is a descriptive sex scene toward the middle of the book. Overall, this book was interesting and creative, and I cannot wait for the sequel to this story. A.J. Mayall, you've got yourself a new fan!

Get past the Sex and it was great!!

So the beginning of the book there is a very strong warning about toon sex. I decided to trudge through it, I was so glad I did. This book is great, the writing style and story itself is very good. The narrator brought life to the story and characters.

Now to the Sex, I get the writer probably wanted the sex to be a main theme, pent up frustrations and who knows maybe a little furry love mixed in. The amount of sex is so low I would recommend removing it, it isn't needed and doesn't actually bring anything to the story. Sex can be conveyed without needing to be graphic, and yes it gets pretty detailed. I'm conflicted about wanting to listen to book 2 but I might just do it. Hope there isn't as much sex, I would listen to this with my kids (which are now adults). I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

Not a tale for kids. But definitely one for grown up fansOf who framed roger rabbit

Ok I like to get my negatives out of the way first. I’m straight and tend to prefer my characters that way, mainly because I’m not a fan of the sex scenes of other styles (and gay toon sex is definitely not my thing). Ok that’s said done and out of the way. Now the book is awesome! The MC and his love for his partner is what helps him keep his humanity. The way the rooms act and consider in regards to humanity is portrayed in an amazing way. Their origins are Very cool and the way that e MC and others are Manipulated into becoming (spoiler) toons is terrifying. I can’t wait to read more In this series as it really does take up for adults in a realm that roger rabbit franchise just let die with time. I was voluntarily provided this free review copy audiobook by the author, narrator or publisher

The Toons Without Roger Rabbit

My son was raised on Roger Rabbit, so I spent endless hours as a mom, watching and being thoroughly enchanted by the toon population of the story. The idea of cartoon characters having a life of their own outside their on screen performance takes some effort to get your head around as an audience. Successfully melding them into a human world, as an author, takes a special kind of talent. Gary K. Wolfe, who created Roger way back in 1981 definitely had that talent and so does A.J, Mayall who credits and thanks Wolfe for giving him his blessing in his introduction to the book.
Like Roger, this story's hero, Tyler Fairfax and his toon alter-ego Fawkes are meant to be fun and entertaining. That, after all, is what toons are all about, but like his predecessor, there is also a lot that is decidedly dark about our hero and about the world he inhabits.
Mayall cautions, in his introduction, that this isn't a book you should buy for you kids, and he knows whereof he speaks. For that matter, the same can be said about Roger Rabbit. Although he loved Roger, I can remember my son curled up on my lap hiding his head against my shoulder so he didn't have to watch the scenes featuring the villain. There were a lot of moments like that during Paint the Toon Red too.
In spite of, or perhaps because of that dichotomy between the lovable toon characters and the dark lives behind the scenes, this is a great book, well written, with deep, complex characters and a story that just doesn't quit.
Whether or not you were a fan of Roger Rabbit who, incidentally, would have been completely at home in Tyler Fairfax's world, i you like suspense stories with a touch of humour and a generous dose of dark fantasy, you'll love this one, and the expert and enthusiastic narration of Nicholas Patrella just raises an already great story to a whole new level of excellence.
