Resumen del Editor

It’s not simply that Dot Wilkinson was one of the most decorated women’s softball players, bowlers, and athletes of all time and one of the original players from the three-time-world-champion PBSW Phoenix Ramblers softball team (1933–1965). Nor was it the length of her time here on Earth—over a century—although any of these things by itself would be impressive. The magic of Dot’s story is in the details. It’s the tale of a childhood spent in poverty, an indomitable, unbreakable spirit, a determination to be the very best to play whatever sport she undertook, the independence to live her personal life on her own terms, and her tremendous success at all of it.

Over more than a decade of countless conversations and interviews, Dot shared all of it with her dear friend, author Lynn Ames. Dot held nothing back. Out at the Plate, told through the lens of Dot and Lynn’s friendship, is the story of a forgotten era in women’s history and sports, and one extraordinary woman’s place at the center of it all.

Softball Excellence

I thoroughly enjoyed this reading and book. It was a very well-written story about a very special person. It was detailed in several areas. It gave insight to how women were treated in those times. It also solidified their importance during the wars of the past. It also gave a very good background and history of the game of softball that I love.

I had never heard of Dot Wilkenson before reading this book. Now, through this book, I wish I had known this remarkably skilled and special woman and her friends and fellow softball teammates and foes. It shows how even opponents can be friends. It also shows that even not so fortunate or well-off people can succeed in what they do when given the chance.

I would recommend this book and give it 5 stars because that is all I could give.

Amazing

what an amazing story of a strong woman who paved the way for girls and women to be able to play sports today. i would put her in the same catergories as pat summit, billie jean king. My only wish is that i am eager to know more about the challenges and opposition she faced in whatcwas called a "mans" world.

Amazing story of a legend!

After listening to this amazing recitation of Dot’s memories of her life I feel as if I knew her personally. Not only is her history amazing but she left the story to be put into print by an amazing author and voiced by a wonderful narrator. I’m sure I will listen to this several more times before I allow it to move down the list in my audible library.

Wonderful true story!

Loved the depth of the friendship that developed between Dot and her interviewer Lynn Ames. Dot’s candor and emotions were evident right from the beginning and the author’s devotion to her subject came through the pages.

Amazing Book!!

I couldn't stop listening. Dot and Lynn's conversations pull you in and you get so invested in Dot's life and stories. You root for her, her teammates and friends on and off the ball field. And the relationships she had were so moving. It's a must read from me!!

Dot’s story is amazing, and Lynn tells it well.

It is a well-documented tale, born of a firm friendship. You can sense Lynn’s affection for the indomitable Dot throughout. Lynn’s reporting and researching experience stood her in good stead as she sifted through Dot’s memories and memorabilia to give us the story. I was honored to get to know Dot through Lynn’s reporting of their interactions on social media. This is a fitting tribute from an amazing author to an amazing sportswoman.

AMAZING

Loved hearing about Dot's life. How Rickie and Dot actually lived. Not like the movie is in A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN. I have not seen the series yet so not sure about that.

A Definite Diamond of a Listen

As a sports fan, I was instantly pulled into Dot's amazing softball career. Once you throw in Lynn Ames' ability to put Dot's life story down in words, you'll find yourself with a book that sails over the fence for a home run. The narrator does a remarkable job of being the voice of the story. The history of women's softball isn't the only draw. The conversations between Dot and Lynn will take you through the legend's life far beyond the ballfield. It's an incredibly intimate look into family and friendships on and off the field. This book wraps all these elements together while also telling a great love story that survived in a time when the laws of the land were not so kind to those in the LGBTQIA+ family. Thank you, Dot and crew, for daring to be exactly who you were. I'll bet the All-Star Game in Heaven has a sold-out crowd packing the bleachers.

What a life

Oh my gosh, I am so glad I got the audio book and listened to the story. I could hear the authors voice while listening. So good, I really enjoyed how the narrator got me to feel Dots emotions during her fiesty times, which were a few. I'm blown away by how humble Dot was about the awards and accolades. Such an inspiring story of just doing what you love.
