Resumen del Editor

A brutal, bloody, and at times hopeful history of the vote; a primer on the opponents fighting to take it away; and a playbook for how we can save our democracy before it’s too late—from the former US Attorney General on the front lines of this fight

Voting is our most important right as Americans—“the right that protects all the others,” as Lyndon Johnson famously said when he signed the Voting Rights Act—but it’s also the one most violently contested throughout US history. Since the gutting of the act in the landmark Shelby County v. Holder case in 2013, many states have passed laws restricting the vote. After the 2020 election, President Trump’s effort to overturn the vote has evolved into a slow-motion coup, with many Republicans launching an all-out assault on our democracy. The vote seems to be in unprecedented peril.

But the peril is not at all unprecedented. America is a fragile democracy, Eric Holder argues, whose citizens have only had unfettered access to the ballot since the 1960s. He takes listeners through three dramatic stories of how the vote was won: first by White men, through violence and insurrection; then by White women, through protests and mass imprisonments; and finally by African Americans, in the face of lynchings and terrorism. Next, he dives into how the vote has been stripped away since Shelby—a case in which Holder was one of the parties. He ends with visionary chapters on how we can reverse this tide of voter suppression and become a true democracy where every voice is heard and every vote is counted.

Full of surprising history, intensive analysis, and actionable plans for the future, this is a powerful primer on our most urgent political struggle from one of the country's leading advocates.

Our Unfinished March

And excellently told and excellently argued presentation of voting in America and what may be done to improve our current circumstance

our vote is both how we participate in society and how we improve our society. Holden argues how many have been disenfranchised as the powerful seek to defend their status quo no matter how hateful or unfair.

holden clearly articulates potential solutions to our dilemma. They are valid solutions if you agree with his culprits.

This is a serious book about a serious and important topic and unlike many of his contemporaries who simply rail against some thing, Holden explains his positions, his concerns and posits remedies.

A must for all to read and learn their history!!

This is the first audible book that I actually listened to multiple times and even took notes. The author made me so curious about our history that I plan to go to the library to get DVDs on some of his references. I am thankful to be alive on some of his references that are fresh in my mind. Voting is something we cannot take for granted because we can lose it in a New York minute!! Our Congress is broken!! We, Americans, must fix it by not letting our ability to vote be taken away from us. I loved this book!

I Never had a doubt about this book! Excellent!

Once I saw who the author was; I knew it would be an excellent book. Indeed it was! I enjoyed the entire book from front to back. Any book that provides solutions is a winner for me.

Brilliant diverse book on voting in America.

This book shows just how much AG Holder understands the history & prescription for the issue of universal suffrage in America.

A Need T Know History Of Voter Suppression And A Way To Fix It

Holder ties in the Constitution and summarizes voter suppression from the civil war to the present time. It is a short but good summary, which ties in real life stories.
The best part of the book is his analysis of the danger to our democracy and the practical actions we can take to stop voter suppression and save our democracy. His proposal to negate the effects of the electoral college is promising and practical, as are his suggestions to reform the Supreme Court.
Anyone who wants to understand the problems with our political system and the real threat to our democracy should read this book, especially pro democracy Republicans and Independents.
