Interesting, Overlooked Dystopian 1950’s Novel

While it’s no substitute for more well known dystopian novels such as “Brave New World” and “1984”, David Karp’s “One” is a worthy companion to them. It is not a particularly suspenseful book, but I don’t think it was meant to be. There is something somewhat relaxed about its tone and its pace, and narrator Keith Brown’s calm voice is a good fit. I’d say it’s more a book of interesting ideas than of action. And that’s not at all a bad thing. Because I believe the author intended to provoke thought more that tell a riveting tale. And I think if you go into this book knowing what it is and what it isn’t, you are more likely to come away from it having enjoyed it.

Pointless Sophistry

I think this early review of the book by Anthony Boucher and Jesse McComas (which I lifted from Wikipedia) says it all. ".... long and tedious repetition of a tired topic, . . . which, for all its literary pretensions, neglects such literary essentials as consistency of background and motivation of characters."

I gave it 4 hours, but I couldn't take one more conversation about the deception represented by paper flowers in water!
