Grief is a monster

On A Clear Day You Can See Block Island is so close to perfection that it nearly became my favorite Gage Greenwood novel. Winter's Myths and Winter's Legacy are tough contenders however, and refused to be edged out. OACDYCSBI is filled with stunning prose and some of the most quotable passages I've ever read.
“Grief was a viral infection. It was as if someone injected them with extreme emotions by the needle full, and it swam in their blood, pumped through their heart, and brain, and coated their stomachs until they’d vomit it out, confused and scared by the sickness. They didn’t know what was happening inside of them; they only knew it didn’t feel good.”
This is a bleak horror story which ruminates on themes of loss, grief, and difficult family dynamics. As always, Gage makes us fall in love with his characters, only to rip them from us in brutal fashion. Many readers are very upset about all of the deaths, but I think they were all necessary, or, if not strictly necessary, they at least all served a greater purpose in relation to the story.
Once again, Gage Greenwood has created a story that sucked me in right from the beginning, and has yet to let me go. I will be thinking about this one for a very long time to come. I only have one thing left to say. F*** you Gage Greenwood. F*** you very much.

YA mildly entertaining

Interesting storyline, however, I prefer much less monster chasing and more scary scenes. Authorities were rather bland, would like to have seen more skepticism.

Fun listen

Good listen, reminiscent of Stranger Things and IT. Good characters and narration. A little predictable but enjoyable nonetheless.

The Keating family had suffered more tragedy and grief than most. When the oldest daughter is killed by something monstrous, all of their lives are permanently changed. The father becomes an alcoholic, the oldest son a drug addict, and the younger siblings are left to fend for themselves. Their tragedy becomes a media sensation, but nobody really believes that there is a monster loose on Block Island.

Charlie and his two younger sisters, Chrissy and Angela, decide to go to the Island to see if they can find the truth of that horrible night. Instead of answers, they unwittingly unleash the monsters on the world. They soon have to fight for their lives in order to survive.

The story is well-written and fast-paced, with plenty of horrors along the way. It is also a story of PTSD and grief. "Grief was the ultimate detonation." You will come to love the strength and resilience of this group of kids, especially the youngest of the bunch, Angela. This is a great blend of folk horror, creature feature, and ancestral oaths that continue to haunt later generations. This is my first book by the author, but I will definitely be looking for more by him. He is a great storyteller and this book will keep you reading long into the night.

The audiobook version of this book was great! The narrator did a fantastic job and her performance made the tension and terror even more real! From the first chapter, you will be haunted by the monster(s) in this book. "Welcome Home" will never sound quiet the same after listening to this one!
