T. Grady Gallant
This work is an enlisted man’s firsthand account of what it was like to be a Marine in the Pacific during World War Two. T. Grady Gallant was a journalist, editor, columnist, author, and editor who took part in the battles of Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. The first part of On Valor’s Side covers the grueling training that members of the First Marine Division underwent at Parris Island, while the second recounts the unit's travel to New Zealand, Guadalcanal, and the Solomon Islands. Besides bombing by Japanese aircraft, naval vessels, and artillery, as well as the continual attacks by tanks and infantry, the men suffered a starvation diet, disease, and sleep deprivation. None of that deterred them from performing the first successful American land assault in World War Two.
