Now the Sheriff had my fingerprints and the name I gave them wouldn’t match the one they found. It was time to move on. Unfortunately, Hendrix didn’t agree with me.

There is such a thing as happily ever after. Or so they say. I got one night with the woman who now has me obsessed, but at the stroke of midnight, she disappeared. Unlike the fairytale, I know exactly where to find Maisie but she refuses to give me the time of day. Now she wants to run away and take my heart with her.

I can’t let that happen.

Can I prove to her that she can have everything she wants or like the first time, is she going to disappear before the clock tower finishes ringing?

What? Who? How? Out of nowhere plotting

Maybe it was starting off the “romance” with a prologue of her having sex with a stranger during a party, but I just couldn’t get into Maisie. Or, maybe it was the bullet-point storytelling that shotgunned plot points onto the wall, like blam, blam! Chapter 1: she’s just killed a guy with a knife to the throat. We’re told it’s self defense, never get a name or backstory for the dead guy, and the town just rolls with it. Oh, and she’s killed before. Chapter 2 (I think) sex (gross sex with dripping, piercings, licking and him referring to her lady bits with the V word, repeatedly). Was it chapter 3 when she tells Hendricks all about her murderous history? More drippy sex (seriously, is talk of drips and wet spots considered romantic?). Hendricks decides to use her bakery to bake? Hendricks’s former military unit hacks her life… because they’re not law enforcement? There’s a cult. She’s a 34 year old, combat boot and cargo pants wearing baker, and he’s a 49 year old veteran (no explanation why he never married). Cult members went to prison. The brother she hasn’t seen in years (no idea how long, but there was a throw down mention of her moving over thirty times) tracks her down (even though she’s living under a new identity) and leaves her a warning note (instead of talking to her)?

“Daddy?”
There’s a kid. And law enforcement. What? Who? Rewind. Relisten. Fill in the blanks. The mystery’s still nonsensical. Troy Duran’s gravelly voice helped get over the awkweird and the what the what, but this story desperately needed better writing. It’s a shame, because I love protector romance and there are kernels of sexy, fun concepts that should’ve delivered buttery popcorn romcom goodness.
